Pink-ribbon publicity raises awareness

In response to Your Voices feature in today’s paper (Oct. 25) regarding “Is breast cancer hogging the spotlight and the money of other worthy causes?”

I can’t help but wonder if any of the folks interviewed have either had breast (or any other kind of cancer) or have had a family member who had suffered with the disease. If they have, I wonder if they would still voice the same opinion.

It is a known fact that due to the publicity of the drive to promote breast cancer awareness there has been a decline in this disease in women. More women are getting mammograms and doing self checks so the cancer can be detected at an early stage, thus having successful treatment.

Personally, I support the publicity – pink ribbons and all. No one forces a person to buy them. I am a breast cancer survivor – eight years. I probably wouldn’t be here now if not for the mammogram. My cancer was detected at a noninvasive stage and removed surgically.
