Coeur d’Alene places third, St. Maries second

After losing its first-round match, Coeur d’Alene bounced back with a nice run Saturday at the State 5A tournament at Hillcrest High School in Idaho Falls.

The Vikings (30-5) ended up third place, falling to Idaho Falls 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 15-8.

Coeur d’Alene eliminated Rocky Mountain, the team that put the Vikings in the consolation side of the bracket. The Vikings also defeated Highland.

In the match for third, Kama Griffitts led CdA with 10 kills and 23 digs. Shelby Robb pitched in 10 kills. Setter Natalie Stewart had 31 assists and three aces.

Eagle claimed a third straight title, topping IF 26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21.

State 3A: St. Maries also had quite a comeback.

The Lumberjacks (25-8), who lost their opener on Friday, came all the way back to play for the championship before falling to Sugar-Salem 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls.

First-year Lumberjacks coach Missy Asbury was more than pleased.

“We were told at the beginning of the year that the cupboard was bare,” Asbury said. “I think it lit a fire under these girls and they wanted to prove something, and they did.”

St. Maries cruised to Intermountain League and District I-II championships. But the Lumberjacks fell to Sugar-Salem.

“We really battled with them, but they’re an amazing team,” Asbury said. “They were very good last year, but this year they were amazing. We just went out there and played with a lot of heart.”

Washington volleyball

Greater Spokane League: Gonzaga Prep eliminated University 25-23, 25-14, 26-24 in a tiebreaker at Mt. Spokane.

The Bullpups move on to play Lewis and Clark on Wednesday.

Emily Hamad led G-Prep with eight kills and Sarah Sicilia had 15 digs. Jordan Bonertz led U-Hi with 11 kills.

District 7 1A: Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) held off Freeman in five games to capture the championship. Cami Alexander led Lakeside with 14 kills in the title match. Leslie Stillar and Sara Moffatt each had 17 digs. … Freeman bounced back to knock off Newport in three to advance to regional play with Lakeside on Saturday. Carley Heinen led Freeman with 10 kills and seven blocks against Newport.

District 7 2B qualifiers: Colfax grabbed the top seed from the Bi-County League to the District 7 2B tournament by topping Davenport 28-26, 25-16, 25-21. … The seeding is set for the eight-team district tourney. St. George’s earned the top seed from the Panorama League by virtue of a 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-13 win over Springdale.

Washington girls soccer

District 8 4A: Mead and Gonzaga Prep will meet for the district championship as both advanced at Albi Stadium. … The Panthers scored a 2-1 decision over University and G-Prep used the same score to stop Lewis and Clark in overtime. Jill Pecka and Mikayla Anderson paced Mead with goals. Megan Lindsay scored both goals for the Bullpups, including the decider 7 minutes into overtime. … The Mead/G-Prep showdown will be at 5 p.m. at Albi Stadium. Both teams have earned state berths.

3A regional: Visiting Shadle Park shut out Hanford 2-0 to advance. Tiara Pajimola and Kristi Wirtz led the Highlanders with goals. Shadle advances to face Mt. Spokane on Wednesday. … East Valley eliminated North Central 2-1 in the other playoff match. Echo Abramson scored the winner 4 minutes into the second half. The Knights advance to meet West Valley-Yakima on Wednesday in Yakima. The winner will play the Shadle-Mt. Spokane winner for regional seeding.

Great Northern League: Chelan Babino and Lena Miraglio scored goals to lead Clarkston past visiting Colville 2-1.
