Gonzaga, WSU roll in exhibitions
Gonzaga’s women’s basketball team opened its two-game exhibition slate with a 77-43 win over Whitman on Sunday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Eleven of the 13 Bulldogs scored during the victory, including three in double digits. Junior Vivian Frieson led Gonzaga with a game-high 21 points with eight rebounds. She also had two blocked shots and a steal in 23 minutes. Freshman Kayla Standish added 12 points, and sophomore Courtney Vandersloot had 10.
The Bulldogs held Whitman, a Division III school, to 26.4-percent shooting, and outrebounded the Missionaries 61-30.
Gonzaga’s final exhibition game is Saturday against Concordia University. Tipoff at the McCarthey Center is set for 2 p.m.
•Five Cougars scored in double figures, including three freshmen, as Washington State opened its exhibition season with a 101-64 victory over Showtime Basketball in Pullman.
Rosie Tarnowski scored 14 points, April Cook had 12 and Katie Grad had 11 in their first action as Cougars. Seniors Katie Appleton and Heather Molzen scored 14 each.
Washington State plays its second and final exhibition game Sunday against Concordia at Friel Court.
•Julie Piper scored seven of Eastern Washington’s final 10 points, including two free throws with eight seconds remaining, to help the Eagles Washington beat Central Washington 67-65 in an exhibition game in Cheney. Piper scored a team-high 19 points, hitting 6 of 7 from the field and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line.
The Eagles play their second and final exhibition game Nov. 10 against Warner Pacific.
