Gravel mine addition approved

A 114-acre addition to a gravel mine east of the Wandermere Golf Course has been approved.

Spokane County Hearing Examiner Michael Dempsey last week granted a zone change from Urban Reserve to Mineral Lands for 104 acres of the undeveloped site.

The approval was subject to revised conditions for use of 10 acres already zoned for mining.

The irregularly shaped site, owned by Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co., is a steep-sided, flat-topped ridge that surrounds an existing 43-acre quarry. It is north of Winger Road and east of Copper Canyon Lane.

Dempsey noted in his decision that plans call for reclamation of the land and creation of a 242-lot residential subdivision within 40 years.

Among other conditions Dempsey imposed, mining operations are limited to daylight hours and may never begin before 7 a.m. or continue past 10 p.m. Mining is banned on Sundays and major holidays.

Also, operations must not create “significant adverse impact” on the local moose population or a noise disturbance for human neighbors.

The goal is to collect over 200,000 pounds of food to support more than 15 community food banks throughout the Inland Northwest, including Second Harvest in Spokane.

Boy Scouts will also be collecting used Scouting items, such as uniforms.
