Nania wins Jr. Bassmasters

Joey Nania of Liberty Lake, Wash., won the 15-18 division at the Junior Bassmaster World Championships Saturday on Geary County State Lake near Junction City, Kan.

Nania won the 11-state Western Division championships held on Lake Coeur d’Alene in May. He was one of six division finalists to compete this weekend.

Fishing conditions deteriorated with a high temperature of about 40 and high winds, according to Joey’s father, Joel. But Joey caught a large fish with just 10 minutes left in the competition to give him a two-fish total of 4 pounds, 1 ounce and the title over Drew Creel of Shawnee, Okla., who finished with 3 pounds, 5 ounces.

Nania, who won the 11-14 title in 2005, wins a $5,000 scholarship and a fully rigged boat package.

“This feels good to win and has been a long dry spell,” said Nania, who has now competed in five world championships.
