Hutton prepares to sell trees

Children at Hutton Settlement, 9907 E. Wellesley Ave., just half-mile east of the Argonne Library, are preparing for Christmas – and learning about agriculture, customer service and business skills with their Christmas tree farm program.

The kids have grand firs, noble firs and Douglas firs just in time for the holiday season. They also have live potted 20-inch Colorado blue spruce for sale.

The sale begins Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and will continue until the trees sell out.

Hours to purchase Christmas trees are Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Prices range from $5 to $60.

Special council meeting Thursday

The Millwood City Council is holding a special public meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 9103 E. Frederick Ave., to discuss the possible condemnation and purchase of a 9-foot frontal strip of the former McVay Brothers property.

Jim Breidenbach, president of Craftsmen Construction and owner of the property, proposed the city purchase the property at 3106 N. Argonne Road. He requested $45,250 – $20,250 for the land and $25,000 to reimburse his expenses incurred during the construction delay.

Blanket drive starts today

Jennifer’s Auto Sales, 15020 E. Sprague Ave., and Spokane Valley Fire Department will be collecting new and gently used blankets to donate to area shelters, through Dec. 24.

Blankets may be dropped off at Jennifer’s or at any Spokane Valley fire station.

Safety day at Gymboree

Gymboree Play and Music, 1405 N. Argonne Road, will have its first Safety Day on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m.

The free event includes a number of agencies promoting safety awareness and injury prevention for parents and caregivers.

SCOPE will provide child-identification kits; Safe Kids Spokane will be on hand to promote car seat safety, helmet safety, and other injury prevention; Spokane County 911 will teach participants how and when to teach children when to dial 911; Community Health Education Resources will be teaching CPR; Annie’s Dog Training will share the importance of safety between dogs and children; along with other safety agencies sharing information to keep children safe.
