Bryant leads Lakers to win over Phoenix

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points and Vladimir Radmanovic made all five of his 3-pointers to lead the Los Angeles Lakers past the Phoenix Suns 105-92 on Thursday night in Phoenix.

Bryant shot only 8 of 23, but the Lakers overwhelmed Phoenix with their depth. Six players reached double figures as Los Angeles improved its record to a league-best 9-1.

Radmanovic scored 15, Lamar Odom 13, Jordan Farmar 11, and Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza 10 apiece for Los Angeles. Amare Stoudemire scored 21 for Phoenix on 9-for-21 shooting.

Celtics defeat Pistons: Rajon Rondo had 18 points and eight assists, outplaying new Pistons acquisition Allen Iverson and leading the Celtics to a 98-80 victory over Detroit in Boston.

Iverson had 16 points and four assists for Detroit, which fell to 4-3 since he was acquired from Denver for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess.

Quinn injured, will play

Brady Quinn got his first NFL win as a starter almost single-handedly.

Quinn broke his right index finger during the first half of Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills, but Cleveland’s new starting quarterback stayed in and led the Browns to a 29-27 victory.

Despite the injury, Quinn will try to play Sunday when the Browns host the Houston Texans.

•Cowboys’ Felix Jones out: The mystery surrounding injured Dallas Cowboys rookie Felix Jones has been solved, and the running back will not play again this season.

Jones has a torn ligament beneath his left big toe, sustained two weeks ago while doing rehabilitation on the left hamstring he hurt Oct. 12. The hamstring is healed, but he will need surgery on the toe and up to six months to fully recover.

GM apologizes: Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage has apologized to a fan for sending a profane e-mail following Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Former Packer dies: Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Bob Jeter died at age 71. He is believed to have died of cardiac arrest at his home in Chicago.

Calvillo tops in CFL: Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo was selected the CFL’s outstanding player for the second time in six seasons.

Baseball

Utley to have surgery

Three-time All-Star Chase Utley, who anchored the middle of the lineup for the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies, will have surgery and may not be ready for the start of the 2009 regular season.

Utley will have surgery next week to repair any bone or cartilage damage he may have in his right hip.

He will begin baseball activity in three to four months.

•Phillies, Rangers make moves: The Phillies and Texas Rangers swapped former first-round picks.

Texas acquired outfielder Greg Golson from the Phillies for outfielder John Mayberry, a former Spokane Indian. The Rangers also designated right-hander Kameron Loe for assignment.

Sorenstam struggles

Annika Sorenstam shot a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round of the ADT Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla., good for a tie for 23rd in the 32-woman event, her final LPGA Tour appearance before “stepping away” from competitive golf. The field gets trimmed to 16 after today’s play, meaning Sorenstam has some work remaining just to reach the weekend.

Penguins win in clutch

Petr Sykora redirected Sidney Crosby’s slap shot on a power play with 2:40 remaining to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 victory over the Thrashers in Atlanta.

Crosby scored his seventh goal to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead 12:24 into the second period. He also was credited with a pair of assists.

Canadiens win in shootout: Alex Tanguay scored on Montreal’s fourth shootout attempt to give the Canadiens a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa.

Bowe will fight again

Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe will fight for the first time in three years on the undercard of the IBF title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Hasim Rahman at Frankfurt, Germany.

Bowe’s opponent for the Dec. 13 fight is yet to be determined, promoters said.

Bowe, 41, retired in 1996 and came back in 2004. He had another fight in 2005 and has not fought since.

Reports in German newspapers said Lennox Lewis, 42, was preparing for a comeback fight against Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir’s older brother, and the WBC champion. Bild newspaper said the fight could take place in the middle of next year.

Davis Cup matches set: Argentina’s David Nalbandian will face Spain’s David Ferrer today in the opening match of the Davis Cup final at Mar Del Plata, Argentina.

Juan Martin del Potro, Argentina’s top-ranked player at No. 9, was drawn to play Feliciano Lopez in the second singles match.

Horses die in blaze: A predawn blaze raced through a barn at a former race track in western Kentucky, killing 27 horses and wiping out the dreams of at least one owner.

It was the second deadly fire in less than a year at Riverside Downs near Henderson, Ky. Investigators did not know the cause.

Among the horses killed were Kept Lady, a winner at Churchill Downs on Sunday, and another 3-year-old filly owned by Kenny Miller.

Kenseth gets extension: Matt Kenseth signed a multiyear contract extension with Roush Fenway Racing to continue driving the No. 17 Ford.
