Pac-10 picks

By Vince Grippi, staff writer

Pete Carroll must really be in a quandary.

Defeat Notre Dame and once again you display your mastery in a rivalry that dates back to before talking movies.

Lose and you get to recruit and play against a Charlie Weis team for a few more years.

I’m sure Carroll is afraid if Weis is forced out, Notre Dame might just hire, say, a Pete Carroll clone.

As always, the listed line is for your entertainment purposes only.

Notre Dame at USC (USC by 32.5): There are reports out of South Bend that Weis will be fired after the Irish lose this game. So his team is going to wake up the echoes and upset the Trojans in L.A. to keep Charlie around. Yeah, right. USC, 48-7.

UCLA at Arizona State (ASU by 9.5): The loser of this game sees its bowl “dreams” go up in smoke. The winner still has to win its rivalry game to become eligible. Talk about emotion. ASU, 27-21.

Oregon at Oregon State (OSU by 3): One team has its first Rose Bowl berth in more than 40 years on the line. The other team has new uniforms. Which one is more motivated? OSU, 35-28.

Washington at Hawaii (UH by 28.5): A midlevel WAC team hosting a lower-level Pac-10 team and the line is more than four touchdowns? Come on. The Warriors may win, but it won’t be that big a blowout. Hawaii, 35-17.

Last week: 2-1 overall, 2-1 vs. spread; Season: 54-15 overall, 35-32 vs. spread.
