Pie toss gets man five days on work crew

BARRE, Vt. – A man who hit Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas in the face with a pie during an Independence Day parade in Montpelier will spend five days on a work crew for the stunt.

Matthew Manning pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct Wednesday and apologized.

The 23-year-old dressed as Santa Claus and ran up to Douglas during the July 3 parade and hit him with a pie before being tackled. The governor wasn’t injured.
