Signup under way for meals program
As of Wednesday, more families will be eligible for the Washington Basic Food Program as income limits will increase to 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.
Families who apply and qualify will automatically be signed up for the free school meals program within 30 days of receiving a Basic Food Program identification number.
Families who currently qualify for reduced-priced school meals will receive free school meals for the remainder of the school year, if they apply and qualify for the Basic Food Program.

Forums planned on school upgrades
The Spokane Public Schools board of directors will hold community forums during October to discuss projects being considered for Phase II of the long-range plan to modernize or replace the district’s oldest buildings.
The plans include upgrading technology and security, along with building improvements to provide a safe and secure learning environment. The forums start at 7 p.m. The schedule:
•Tuesday – Hutton Elementary gym, 908 E. 24th Ave.
•Oct. 14 – Rogers High School cafeteria, 1622 E. Wellesley Ave.
•Oct. 16 – Ferris High School cafeteria, 3020 E. 37th Ave.
•Oct. 21 – Finch Elementary gym, 3717 N. Milton St.
•Oct. 23 – Westview Elementary gym, 6104 N. Moore St.,

Early childhood program expands
The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program has new offerings in Spokane. This year, two new programs are offered at Stevens and Lincoln Heights elementaries. Openings are still available for both morning and afternoon classes at Lincoln Heights.
Classes are for children ages 3 and 4 from low-income families living in Spokane. Busing is provided within designated areas.
Families are encouraged to participate in all areas of the free program, which includes health, family support services, parenting education, mental health, nutrition and disabilities.
