Lumberjacks topple Eagles in Big Sky

Lexi Sullivan, Alex Fell and Emily Osiadacz all finished with double-digit kills Saturday night in leading Northern Arizona to a 30-28, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 Big Sky Conference volleyball win over Eastern Washington in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Lumberjacks (11-3, 3-2) were aided by 18 service errors committed by the Eagles (6-9, 3-3) who got a match-high 26 kills from Hayley Hills.

•Hanna Cutura had a match-high 15 kills in leading eighth-ranked California to a 25-14, 25-21, 26-24 Pacific-10 Conference win over Washington State in Pullman.

The Bears (14-1, 4-0) also got 10 kills from Am’ra Solomon, while Brittany Tillman paced WSU (7-8, 0-4) with six kills.

•Haley Larsen posted her seventh double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs to lead visiting Idaho to a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference win over Fresno State. The Vandals (10-6, 3-2) have won nine straight against FSU (5-10, 2-4).

•Visiting Gonzaga got 17 kills from Layne Brosky and 17 digs from Paige Dillingham, but it was not enough to keep the Bulldogs (6-11, 0-2) from falling to West Coast Conference rival San Francisco 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25.

•Beth Hanna had 20 kills and 14 digs in leading Pacific Lutheran (10-5, 4-2) to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 Northwest Conference win over host Whitworth. The Pirates (9-9, 2-4) got 14 kills and 10 digs from Kaimi Rocha.

•In Ontario, Ore., Grethe Vogel pounded down 13 kills and teammates Bryn DeLong and Alex Cey each came up with 19 digs as visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (16-15, 3-4) outlasted Treasure Valley (25-8, 3-3) 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 17-25, 15-13.

•Tamara da Silva had 13 kills and eight digs to lead Salt Lake CC to a 3-1 win over visiting North Idaho College.

Men’s soccer

North Idaho College got goals from Boone Femrite, Orlando Figueroa, Cesar Aguirre and Thomas Brempong in a 4-0 romp past Colorado Mountain College in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Women’s soccer

Despite its 8-4 edge in shots on goal, Whitworth fell 1-0 in overtime to Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark in Portland. The goal was scored by the Pioneers’ Natalie Stratton 52 seconds into the overtime period.

•Patty Duncan scored one goal and assisted on another scored by teammate Amanda Swenson as visiting Community Colleges of Spokane played to a 2-2 tie with Lane at Eugene, Ore.

•Kirsten Olson scored on a second-half penalty kick as North Idaho College (7-4-2) earned a 1-1 tie against previously No. 1-ranked Iowa Western (9-2-1) in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Cross country

Washington State’s Sara Trane finished with a 5,000-meter time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds to win the women’s title in the University of Montana Invitational. The Cougars women also claimed the next four individual spots, with Chelsea VanDeBrake finishing second in the non-scoring meet with a time of 18:25.

Eastern Washington’s top finisher was Amber Nickelson (18:52), who finished 10th, while Gonzaga got a 16th-place finish from Laura Volcheff (19:27).

The men’s title went to former East Valley High School standout Nick Atwood, a Montana State student running unattached, who covered the 8,000 in 24:44. Gonzaga’s Colby Litzenberger (26:16) finished 11th.

•Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter toured the 5,000-meter course at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem, Ore., in a time of 17:30 to claim top individual honors among women competitors in the Gold Division of the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational and lead the Vandals to a second-place finish.

Teegan Schoch (18:14) and Maike Holtuijzen (18:24) also finished in the top 10 for UI, while Community Colleges of Spokane got a 24th-place finish from Amy Durrance and placed sixth.

In the men’s Gold Division competition, Idaho’s Markus Geiger ran 8,000 in 25:19 to finish 10th and guide UI to a second-place finish. CCS got a 19th-place finish from Rigoberto Jimenez (25:33) and took fourth in the men’s standings.

In the men’s Cardinal Division, Whitworth’s Nicholas Gallagher placed 14th in 25:22 to lead the Pirates to a seventh-place finish, while the Whitworth women, paced by 20th-place finisher Dana Misterek, took sixth.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves (7-3) got an early goal from AJ King but couldn’t hold off Columbia Valley, which posted a 3-1 KIJHL victory in Invermere, B.C.
