Mead’s Mires blazes at Sunfair
Mead sophomore Baylee Mires breezed around the 3-mile course at Yakima’s Franklin Park in 17 minutes, 59.5 seconds on Saturday to capture the individual girls title in the 2008 Sunfair invitational cross country meet.
Mires’ effort, which came in the seventh flight against the top runners from the other 40 schools represented at the meet, was 12 seconds better than that of runner-up Alyssa Andrews, from Gig Harbor, and helped the Panthers to a seventh-place team finish.
Central Valley finished eighth, one spot behind Mead, in the girls team competition, which was won by Gig Harbor, and crowned an individual champion in freshman Jamie Lambie, who won the first flight with a time of 20:13.9.
Other top finishers in the girls seventh flight included Coeur d’Alene sophomore Kinsey Gomez (18:27.3), who was fourth, and Shadle Park junior Andrea Nelson (18:30.0), who was fifth.
Gig Harbor also claimed the boys team championship, while Central Valley finished sixth behind junior Will Richards’ second-place effort (17:09.4) in the second flight.
Coeur d’Alene, which got a 14th-place first-flight finish from senior Nick Pierson, finished ninth in the team standings, while Mt. Spokane claimed 12th behind junior Allan Schroeder’s eighth-place time of 16:00.7.
•Sandpoint’s Megan Bartlett ran a course- and school-record time of 18:10 to win the girls individual crown in the Sandpoint Invitational. Bartlett, a senior, outdistanced second-place finisher Molly Mitchell, from Lake City by 13 seconds.
Mitchell, who ran an 18:23, and teammate Rhianna Grossman, who finished third in 19:47, led Lake City to the team championship.
Lake City also won the boys team championship behind the 1-2 finish of junior Cody Helbling and sophomore Dan Scott. Helbling was clocked in 15:56 and Scott finished in 16:28 to edge Colville’s Jake Hastings (16:30) and Ned Fischer (16:31) for second place in the individual standings.
Volleyball
Intermountain League: In her first game back following an appendectomy, Michelle Guidry dished out 19 assists and had five kills in leading host St. Maries (7-0) to a 3-0 sweep of Priest River (6-2).
Girls soccer
Great Northern League: Lena Miraglio scored both of Clarkston’s goals as the visiting Bantams (1-5 GNL) turned back Colville (0-6) 2-0.
Inland Empire League: Heidi Mueller scored a second-half goal from 25 yards out to help host Post Falls (4-9-1, 3-5-1) earn a 1-1 tie with Moscow (4-6-5, 1-5-3), which got its goal on a first-half breakaway by Kerry Moller. … Bailey Hewitt scored three goals and dished out one assist, and teammate Brittany Clawson finished with three assists as Sandpoint (9-3-3, 6-0-2) notched a 7-0 win over visiting Lewiston (2-11-0, 1-8-0).
Intermountain League: Bonners Ferry (8-7-1, 7-3-1) got first-half goals from Kina Wasmer and Amy Andrews and held on of a 2-1 win over host Kellogg (3-7-1, 3-3-1). … Rebecca Pence scored three goals and Katie Nemeth added two as Orofino (5-1-0, 5-0-0) posted a 5-0 win over visiting St. Maries (4-7-3, 3-3-1).
Boys soccer
Inland Empire League: Adam Crossingham scored two goals and Ben Murray added a goal and an assist as Sandpoint (14-1-0, 8-1-0) rolled to a 6-0 win over visiting Lewiston (0-11-1, 0-8-1). … Mac Stannard and Nico Sanchez each finished with a goal and an assist as host Moscow (10-2-2) notched a 5-0 win over Post Falls (2-10-1, 0-8-1).
Intermountain League: Vince Skjeveland had two goals and an assist and teammate Chris Gerhardt added a pair of goals as Bonners Ferry (10-4-3, 5-0-0) celebrated Senior Night with a 7-0 rout of Priest River (0-7-0, 0-7-7). … St. Maries’ match at Orofino was called off because of lighting. No makeup date has been set.
