WCC honors GU keeper
Lauren Ames of Gonzaga, who didn’t allow a goal as the Bulldogs played to two scoreless ties last weekend, shares the West Coast Conference women’s soccer player of the week honors.
The sophomore goalkeeper stopped seven shots against Idaho State and a career-high 12 against Weber State in running her season shutout total to five and career total to seven.
•John Brookever of Whitworth, who scored the first goal of the match and the winner in overtime of a 3-2 victory at Whitman, is the Northwest Conference men’s offensive soccer player of the week.
Cross country
For the second time in three meets, Idaho senior Allix Lee-Painter cruised to victory, and for the second time was honored as the Western Athletic Conference women’s athlete of the week.
Lee-Painter covered 5,000 meters in 17:30.87 in the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore., for a 33-second win. Idaho was second among 16 teams.
•Whitworth sophomore Nick Gallagher, the second NCAA Division III finisher in his division in Salem, is the Northwest Conference men’s runner of the week.
College golf
Whitworth sophomore Ryan Young had to go four extra holes for his first collegiate victory as he led the Pirates men to a share of first place in the Northwest Conference North tournament that wound up Monday at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick.
Young and Brian Barton of Whitman matched 4-over-par 148s for 36 holes before Young claimed medalist honors on the fourth playoff hole.
Whitworth, which had four players in the top five, and Puget Sound shared the team title with 620s.
In the companion women’s event, Krystal Pitkonen’s 167 led Whitworth to a 10-stroke victory over UPS, 689-699. The Loggers’ Natalie Nakamine was medalist with a 158.
•North Idaho College had the medalist, Cody Mee with a 67, but the Cardinals dropped a 290-299 non-conference men’s decision to Lewis-Clark State at Quail Ridge in Clarkston.
In the women’s dual, LCSC recorded a 334-409 victory. NIC was led by Cara Jo Hayman’s 95.
Football
Eastern Washington’s 47-36 upset loss at Portland State cost the Eagles 12 spots in the The Sports Network Top 25 poll this week.
The Eagles, who slid from 11th to No. 23, will entertain No. 12 Montana at 2:05 p.m. this Saturday in Cheney.
