Letts scores twice in Chiefs win

Spokane takes over first place in division

PORTLAND – Ryan Letts scored a pair of goals to lead the Spokane Chiefs over the Portland Winter Hawks 6-2 in Western Hockey League play Friday night.

Letts had a power-play goal in the second period and his second at even strength 6:38 later.

Spokane (5-1-2-0) also got goals from Levko Koper, Trevor Glass, Tyler Johnson and Steve Kuhn.

Glass and Koper each added an assist, while Stefan Ulmer and Johnson added two assists.

Luke Walker and Travis Ehrhardt replied for Portland (1-5-0-0).

Chief goalie Dustin Tokarski made 23 saves for the win, while Kurtis Mucha stopped 31 shots for the Winter Hawks.

The Chiefs claimed first place in the U.S. Division, two points ahead of the Tri-City Americans, a 5-1 loser to Brandon.

Spokane’s Mitch Wahl sat out the second game of his league-imposed three-game suspension.

Spokane will host the Everett Silvertips tonight at the Arena in the first of three straight home games. Everett (3-3-1-0) is in third place in the U.S. Division, five points behind Spokane.

Everett was a 5-2 winner over Seattle.

Everett’s Daniel Bartek is tied for fifth in WHL scoring with three goals and eight assists.

Spokane completes the homestand with games against Portland on Wednesday and Kamloops on Friday.
