Cougars score upset
Pittman lifts No. 24 WSU past No. 13 Cal
Freshman Tiara Pittman’s goal with just more than a minute left in regulation provided No. 24 Washington State with a 2-1 victory over visiting No. 13 California in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer match.
Pittman, a Spokane native, got the game winner in the 89th minute after junior Kiersten Dallstream created a turnover and fed the ball to Pittman at the top of the box.
The Cougars (7-3-4, 1-1-1) posted victories in consecutive conference matches at home against a ranked team for the first time since 2004. It ended an eight match winning streak for the Golden Bears (9-4-0, 2-1-0).
•Visiting Pepperdine blanked Gonzaga 2-0 in a West Coast Conference match.
The Waves (6-7-2, 1-1-0) outshot the Zags (5-8-2, 0-2-0) 13-4 with a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
•Eastern Washington fell short on the road in a 2-0 decision to Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference match.
Kim Kemper put the Hornets (8-6-1, 2-1-0) on the board in the sixth minute. The best chance for EWU (2-9-3, 0-2-1) came in the 37th minute when a shot by Chelsey Hannesson was saved by keeper Savannah Abercrombie.
•Christen Press scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season to lead second-ranked Stanford (13-0-1, 3-0-0 Pac-10) to a 5-1 win over host Washington (9-5-0, 0-3-0).
Men’s soccer
Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in a WCC match at Gonzaga.
The Bulldogs (5-6-2, 2-3-1) scored first when Tye Perdido won a race to the ball and shipped it into the open net for his sixth goal of the season in the eighth minute.
The Gaels (3-6-3, 2-1-2) scored when Yousef Samy got enough of his head on the ball after a free kick from Joe Furnia bounced around in traffic.
•UCLA snapped Washington’s six-match winning streak, topping the visiting Huskies 2-0 in Pac-10 play.
Volleyball
No. 25 Oregon State topped host Washington State 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23 in a Pac-10 match.
Rachel Rourke led OSU (13-6, 2-4) with 26 kills. Brittany Tillman led the Cougars (7-11, 0-7) with 12.
•No. 6 Oregon knocked off seventh-ranked Washington 3-2 in a Pac-10 match in Seattle.
Gorana Maricic led the Ducks (14-4, 3-3) with 33 kills while Kindra Carlson had 17 for UW (14-3, 5-2).
•Willamette outlasted visiting Whitworth 3-2 in a Northwest Conference match at Salem, Ore.
Ka’ipo Rocha led Whitworth (11-10, 4-5) with 13 kills and 12 digs.
•Community Colleges of Spokane (21-18) went 2-1 during the first day of the Wenatchee Valley Crossover.
