Eagles overcome Bengals

Hills collects 30 kills and 11 digs

After dropping the first set Thursday, Eastern Washington University bounced back to knock off visiting Idaho State University 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match.

EWU is tied for second place with Portland State, behind Northern Colorado.

Hayley Hills led the Eagles (11-9 overall, 6-3 Big Sky) with 30 kills. She also had 11 digs. Mandy Daniels led with 19 digs as five Eagles finished in double figures.

Britta Bartschi led ISU (5-16, 2-7) with 13 kills.

•Visiting No. 5-ranked Salt Lake Community College (27-7, 7-0) swept North Idaho College (24-9, 6-2) 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match.

SLCC moved within a win of clinching the conference title.

Women’s basketball

The University of Montana is favored to repeat as Big Sky Conference champion in preseason polls of coaches and media that cover the league.

Montana received eight first-place votes and 64 points in the coaches’ poll while Portland State received one first-place vote and 56 points. Montana State was third with 50 points. Eastern Washington University was picked ninth in both polls.

In the media poll, Montana received 22 first-place votes and 214 points, followed by PSU with two first-place votes and 192 points. MSU was third with 164.

Montana returns four starters and nine letterwinners from its 2007-08 team, which posted a 25-7 record in winning a 17th league title.

Football

The Spokane Shock of arenafootball2 announced that offensive lineman Lorenzo Breland has been added to their 2009 roster.

Breland finished his collegiate career at Jackson State in 2007 and is expected to compete for the starting center position.
