Blown away by the generosity

Jerry Lewis (Associated Press / The Spokesman-Review)

Jerry Lewis raised a record $65 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in his annual Labor Day tel

ethon, which also made a pitch for those affected by Hurricane Gustav.

This year’s telethon added a special plea for the 5,000 MDA-registered families forced to leave their homes because of the hurricane.

The haul for the 43rd annual fundraising blitz was $1.2 million more than last year.

Lewis said he didn’t expect to exceed the 2007 number because of the sluggish economy.

“Each year I tell myself, ‘This has got to be it. There’s no way we can do better,’ ” he said.

“Then, the following year, I’m astounded to see that generosity driven by love and compassion has a greater capacity than I thought possible. I am awed and humbled by this response.”

The 82-year-old Lewis co-hosted the telethon from the South Point hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

Longtime participant Ed McMahon, Tony Orlando, “Access Hollywood” host Nancy O’Dell and others shared the hosting duties. Celine Dion, 3 Doors Down, Kid Rock and Reba McEntire performed.

Money where his mouth is

London’s Victoria and Albert Museum announced Tuesday that it paid $92,500 for the original artwork of The Rolling Stones’ famous “lips” logo, inspired by Mick Jagger’s mouth.

The logo was designed by London art student John Pasche in 1970, and first used on the “Sticky Fingers” album the next year.

Pasche told The Guardian newspaper that the idea for the logo came “when I met Jagger for the first time at the Stones’ offices. Face to face with him, the first thing you were aware of was the size of his lips and his mouth.”

Family ways

Golfer Tiger Woods announced on his Web site that wife Elin is pregnant with their second child, due in late winter.

And People magazine reports that “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, 46, and former model Deborah Lin, 40, tied the knot Saturday in a small church ceremony in her hometown of Honolulu.

Wing and a prayer

Trisha Yearwood had a harrowing experience on a recent flight to Oklahoma when her plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Baltimore because of a cracked windshield.

“I’m pretty spiritual about it,” she says. “I turn it over to God and think, ‘There’s nothing I can do about it.’

“And I also think, ‘What are the odds?’ I’ve been flying for 18 years and had one emergency landing. That’s pretty good.”

Puffy’s clouded skies

Rising fuel prices have forced Sean “Diddy” Combs to start taking commercial flights instead of private jets.

In a YouTube video, the hip-hop mogul pleads for free oil from his “Saudi Arabia brothers and sisters.”
