Defense sparks Cusick to win over Odessa

Spencer Shanholtzer accounted for four touchdowns and the Cusick defense came up big as the Panthers opened the Washington football season by defeating defending Northeast 1B champion Odessa 34-6 Friday.

Shanholtzer opened the scoring with a 7-yard run and then the sophomore quarterback ran for the two-point conversion. After the Tigers, runner-up in the state last year, scored but failed on the conversion, Shanholtzer, who rushed for 111 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Dustin Villegas ran for the PAT and then made it 22-6 at the half by scoring on a 10-yard run. Villegas finished with 180 yards on 15 carries as the Panthers rolled up 422 yards of total offense.

Shanholtzer, who threw for 213 yards, iced the win with a short run and short touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 58, Inchelium 32: The Warriors opened defense of the State B-8 championship with a big win over the visiting Hornets, who came to life after falling behind 32-0 in the first half. Graison Sizemore sparked ACH with 91 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries. Dylan Wulff led Inchelium with 17 carries for 112 yards and one touchdown.

Cusick 28, Sprague-Harington 20: Ethan Mannix rushed 12 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns after Dakota Drennan, who added 80 yards, scored the opening touchdown for the home-standing Panthers. Tyler Scharff led the Falcons with 53 yards and two touchdowns.

Wilbur-Creston 32, Wellpinit 16: Dustin Taylor returned an interception 75 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the visiting Wildcats’ win over the Redskins. Haydon Herdrick’s 45-yard run, his second touchdown, in the third quarter made it 26-18.

Columbia 54, Pateros 22: The Lions won big on the road.

Non-league

Sandpoint 21, Colville 20:

Jake Semones threw for two late touchdowns and then ran in a two-point conversion after the second to rally the Bulldogs (1-1) past the visiting Indians (0-1). Semones hit 15 of 21 passes for 216 yards with Mike Hubbard, who scored the final touchdown, catching six for 93 yards.

Cheney 30, Lakeland 10: Drew Ableman and Dalton Harding returned interceptions for touchdowns in a 20-point fourth quarter as the Blackhawks (1-0) beat the visiting Hawks. Ableman did the trick twice, getting the first called back by a penalty and then taking the ball 40 yards on the next play. Quarterback DeAngelo Jones led Cheney with 130 yards and two touchdowns rushing and hit 11 of 15 passes for 191 yards.

Lethbridge 39, Bonners Ferry 14: The Canadians rolled to a 29-0 halftime lead as Mackay Biam ran for three touchdowns. The Badgers (0-2) got late touchdowns from Spencer Henslee and Colton Telford.

Grangeville 20, Kellogg 17: Jason Lorentz, who rushed for 143 yards, scored two touchdowns in a 20-point fourth quarter to rally the home team past the Wildcats (0-2).

Mountain View 28, Post Falls 6: The Trojans turned the ball over six times to fall on the road.

Kootenai 42, St. John-Endicott 0: The Warriors (2-0) rolled to an easy victory on the road.

Lewiston 39, Clarkston 0: The Bengals (2-0) won the rivalry game easily on the Bantams’ (0-1) field.

Moscow 21, Timberlake 0: The Bears had no problem with the visiting Tigers.

Deer Park 30, Chewelah 13: Alex Wolf ran for 183 yards and one touchdown and Sam Fisk completed 12 of 24 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown as the Stags (1-0) rolled past the Cougars (0-1).

West Valley 49, Ephrata 7: The Eagles scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to break a tie and went on to roll over the Tigers with 538 yards of total offense. Junior Drew Clausen sparked the offense by throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another.

Riverside 21, Kettle Falls 6: Chase Florez and Tanner Symons combined for 182 yards and each scored a second-half touchdown as the visiting Rams (1-0) pulled away from the Bulldogs (1-0).

Pullman 33, Ellensburg 6: Senior Cody Weber ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries to spark the visiting Greyhounds (1-0), who held the Bulldogs (1-0) to 58 yards of total offense.

Lakeside 26, Quincy 8: The Eagles (1-0) of Nine Mile Falls went on the road and turned back the Jackrabbits (0-1).

Garfield-Palouse 46, Davenport 0: The Vikings (1-0) had no trouble with the visiting Gorillas (0-1).

Oroville 20, Republic 13: Preston Iverson had one carry but it was for a 42-yard touchdown, which proved to be the difference as the visiting Hornets (1-0) edged the Tigers (0-1). Nick Perez led the winners with 83 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and also had a TD reception. Ryan Swank threw for 71 yards and two TDs for Republic.

LaCrosse-Washtucna 68, Nixyaawii 20: The Tigercats started both halves quickly to knock off the visitors from Oregon. Jacob Blankenship had 123 yards as L-W rolled up 331 on the ground. Garrett Blauert had 69 yards and two touchdowns on three carries and opened the scoring with a 65-yard punt return.

Asotin 25, Orofino 14: Craighton Alfred threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns and D.J. Darnall carried nine times for 66 yards and a touchdown and added another receiving as the Panthers (1-0) beat the visiting Maniacs (0-1).

Springdale 54, Valley Christian 14: The Chargers romped to an easy victory over the Panthers at the old University High School.

Intermountain League

Priest River 14, St. Maries 12: Chuan Chambers scored two first-half touchdowns for the visiting Spartans (1-0) who held on to edge the Lumberjacks (0-2). Ryan Huddleston scored for St. Maries in the third quarter, but the Lumberjacks’ attempt at the tying two-point conversion was denied.

North Star League

Lakeside 30, Mullan 6: Levi and Will Dole combined for three touchdowns to lead the Knights (1-1) past the visiting Tigers (1-1). Will Dole scored on a 66-yard reception before his brother scored on a 49-yard interception return and a 75-yard run.

Wallace 54, Clark Fork 6: The homestanding Miners rolled in the league opener but no other details were provide.
