Vandals claim invite
The University of Idaho, behind the play of Haley Larsen swept past Eastern Washington and Notre Dame during Saturday’s final day of competition in the Idaho Volleyball Classic in Moscow, Idaho.
Larsen had 19 kills and hit .372 as the host Vandals drilled EWU 25-21, 25-15, 27-25, and came back in the tournament’s nightcap to register 14 kills in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-17 win over Notre Dame (3-3).
“Our effort and attitude were great,” UI coach Debbie Buchanan said, “and we continued to learn and get better throughout the day.”
Eastern (3-4) knocked off Washington State 25-27, 25-20, 25-16, 26-24 earlier in the day.
EWU got 17 kills from Haley Hills in its win over WSU (3-3) and a combined 22 kills from Hills and Alysha Cook in its loss to Idaho.
Washington State also lost to Notre Dame 25-16, 25-22, 25-14 on Saturday, despite the 11 kills and .500 hitting percentage of Emily Rooney.
UI’s Sara Loney was named tournament MVP and joined teammates Larsen and Sarah Conwell on the all-tournament team, which also included Hills and Ashley Hamilton, from EWU, and Rooney.
•Lewis-Clark State swept past Montana Western and then knocked off host Whitworth 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 to win the five-team Whitworth Volleyball Invitational.
Whitworth beat Whitman 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 earlier in the day behind the play of Kaimi Rocha, who hit .345 and had 14 kills.
L-C State finished 4-0 in the tournament, followed by Menlo (3-1) and Whitworth (2-2), which placed Rocha and her sister, Ka’ipo Rocha on the all-tournament team.
•North Idaho College, behind the hitting of Lydia Tollbom and Adrielle Dunn, knocked off host Community Colleges of Spokane 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 in the championship match to win the five-team Inland Northwest Communications Tournament at SFCC.
Tollbom was named the tournament’s most valuable player and Dunn made the all-tournament team, along with teammates Maddie Dolny and Kaylen Meredith and CCS’s Nicole Solum and Nicole Graybeal.
Cross Country
Eastern Washington’s men and Washington State’s women claimed team titles in inaugural Clash of the Inland Northwest meet held at Mead High School.
EWU’s Paul Limpf was the top men’s finisher in a time of 19 minutes. His teammate, Alex Smyth, finished second in 19:42.1.
Idaho, which finished second in the women’s standings, had the top two individual placers in Allix Lee-Painter (15:20.4) and Teegan Schoch (15:42.6), while WSU, which was led by Chelsea VanDeBrake (15:43.3), claimed the next six individual spots.
•Whitworth won the men’s title at the Whitman Invitational in Walla Walla and finished second in the women’s race.
The Pirates’ Nick Gallagher (19:39.7) and Dusty Caseria (19:42.7) finished 2-3 in the men’s race, while Tonya Turner (15:06.3) and Kathryn Williams (15:12.6) finished 4-5 for the WU women.
Men’s soccer
Caleb Barnhill scored a pair of goals to power 15th-ranked Whitworth (3-0) to a 6-1 win over California Lutheran in a non-conference match in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The Pirates play at UC Santa Cruz on Monday.
