Simon guides Vikings

Sadie Simon scored three goals, the last in the 77th minute, to lift Coeur d’Alene to a 4-3 victory at Lewiston in an Inland Empire League girls soccer game Wednesday afternoon.

Simon had two goals and assisted on a Haley Smith goal as the Vikings jumped to a 3-0 lead just more than 33 minutes into the game before the Bengals came back. Lewiston then scored two quick goals in the second half before Smith, a junior, assisted on the senior’s game winner.

Also in the IEL, Lake City outshot Moscow 15-1 but couldn’t get a shot past Hale Couture and had to settle for a 0-0 tie at Coeur d’Alene. Shannon Fraser notched the shutout for the Timberwolves. … Sandpoint scored two early goals, but Post Falls rallied to tie the game before the visiting Bulldogs pulled out the 3-2 win on a goal by Brittany Oakley in the 39th minute.

Boys soccer

Rob Astin and Jordan Eborall scored two goals apiece to lead Coeur d’Alene to an 8-0 win over visiting Lewiston in an IEL game. Astin moved into the Vikings’ career top 10 in goals. Shelby Barrera and freshman Adam Borsheim each had a goal and a pair of assists for the Vikings, who outshot the Bengals 25-2. … Also in the IEL, Lake City sophomore Chris Wheeler scored on a diving header in the 79th minute, 4 minutes after the Timberwolves had tied the game, to pull out a 3-2 victory at Moscow. The Timberwolves opened the scoring in the first minute on a goal by Montana Patton. … Outstanding passing allowed Sandpoint to roll to a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-0 win over visiting Post Falls. Ben Murray had three assists, two in the first 6 minutes on goals by Adam Crosshingham and Danny Anderson. Zach Linscott also had a pair of assists and Tanner French picked up two goals.

Volleyball

Senior Shelby Robb had 23 digs, nine kills, two blocks and an ace to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 3-2 win over visiting Sandpoint in an IEL match. The Vikings won the first two games before the Bulldogs rallied to force a fifth game, which CdA pulled out 15-11. Kama Griffits had 15 kills out of the back row and three service aces for the winners. … Also in the league, Lake City won a four-game slugfest with visiting Post Falls as Aliva Johnson had 15 kills, Jacqueline Adamson 29 assists and Rose Brooks 19 digs.

•Kellogg took advantage of Bonners Ferry’s serving problems for a 3-0 win in an Intermountain League match on the road. Brenna Fueschiel led Kellogg with four kills and two digs while teammate Kirsten Vischer had 13 assists and five aces.

•Greater Spokane League teams opened the season with non-league matches. In 3-0 sweeps, Lewis and Cark beat University and East Valley topped Rogers. Winning 3-1 were Gonzaga Prep over Central Valley and Mt. Spokane over Ferris.
