Giving hip-hop a feminist edge
ID: Mirrored Katz is an affiliate of Spokane’s Bad Penmanship rhympire.
Style: Feminist-edged conscious hip-hop
Roster: Emcee activists Noel Lanter aka Knowell and Jaeda Glasgow.
Watch what you say: Jaeda is the mother of 2-year-old Ayva and 2-month-old Max. She said being a mom makes her even more conscious of her lyrics.
“One day my daughter is going to be listening to that music. I have to think about how my child is going to benefit from that,” Jaeda said. “As a mom you’re more aware of what you’re saying.”
Knowell said, “My niece downloaded some of our songs and she’s all about it. Now she’s thinking about conscious thoughts. Before she was into the bad girl stuff. She was listening to a lot of Britney Spears. It’s a relief to see that I could be someone she looks up to. That could make a huge difference.”
In the lab: Mirrored Katz is a few songs away from finalizing a 10-track debut self-release with an all-star cast of local and regional producers including Criminal Doogie (aka Joe Varela), Kenji 451, Ton Sheeky and Dust.
Next gig: Mirrored Katz opens with Bad Penmanship for Living Legends on Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Knitting Factory, 919 W. First Ave. Tickets are $10, through TicketsWest, www.ticketswest.com, (509) 325-SEAT.
