Mead opens with sweep
Defending State 4A champion Mead got its Greater Spokane League volleyball season off to an impressive start Thursday with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-15 sweep of visiting Ferris.
Junior Alexis Olgard had 12 kills, four blocks and three aces to lead the Panthers.
Elsewhere on opening night in the GSL, University rebounded from a fourth-game pasting to beat host Gonzaga Prep 25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 9-25, 17-15 behind the 30 digs of Amy Hallett. … Lewis and Clark got 11 kills from Oceana Bush in a 25-16, 26-24, 25-21 win at Central Valley. … Mary Konis had 13 assists and 12 digs as visiting Mount Spokane swept North Central 25-19, 25-10, 25-10.
Great Northern League: Alyssa Wold served six straight aces in the first game to spark visiting West Valley (1-1) to a 25-8, 25-13, 25-23 victory over Medical Lake (0-2). … Pullman moved to 2-0 with a 25-7, 25-9, 25-20 sweep at Riverside (1-1) behind Katie Guettinger’s 27 assists. … Colville (1-0) outlasted host Cheney (0-2) 25-21, 12-25, 25-20, 25-22, despite 30 assists by Sayde Davis.

Great Northern League: Courtney Kelley’s hat trick – all in the final 14 minutes – rallied visiting Medical Lake (3-0) to a 3-2 overtime victory over Colville (0-1), which played short-handed after a red card in the 70th minute. … Stevie Harris scored a hat trick as Deer Park (1-1) rolled past visiting Clarkston 5-1. … Laura Estey’s goal in the 77th minute pulled West Valley (2-0) even and the Eagles beat host Cheney 3-2 in a shootout.
Inland Empire League: Goalie Shannon Fraser of host Lake City (2-0-3) made six saves in a 0-0 tie against rival Coeur d’Alene (2-0-1).
Intermountain League: Ryder Anderson had two goals and Kellogg got its first victory in three tries, 3-0 over host Priest River (0-4).

Inland Empire League: Kurt Meyer’s header off an indirect kick by Matt Burns started visiting Lake City on its way to a 2-1 victory over Coeur d’Alene, the Timberwolves (4-1) pulling even with Sandpoint atop the standings.
Women’s volleyball
Mandy Daniels’ ace capped a four-point run that closed out Eastern Washington’s 25-22, 28-26, 18-25, 18-25, 15-12 victory over Weber State in Ogden, Utah, in a Big Sky Conference opener.
Hayley Hills (26 kills) and Chenoa Coviare had kills down the stretch, helping the Eagles (4-6 overall) erase a 10-8 deficit in the final game.
