GU men win their tourney
Phillippe Garre scored his first goal of the season, Scott Barnum had five saves and Gonzaga University held off Cal State Bakersfield down the stretch for a 1-0 men’s soccer victory Sunday to win the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic.
The Bulldogs (3-2-1) won their tournament for the first time in three tries.
Oregon State, which defeated Missouri-Kansas City 5-1 on Sunday, finished third and UMKC took fourth.
Four Bulldogs were named to the all-tournament team – defenders Nick Barclay, Tim Muravez and Mitch Boland, along with forward Tye Perdido, the tournament MVP.
•John Prugh and Eddy Prugh each scored a goal and Whitworth defeated Willamette 2-0 in a Northwest Conference match at Salem, Ore.
The Pirates are 6-0-1, 2-0 NWC. Willamette is 1-5, 0-2.
Women
Whitworth (5-1, 1-1 NWC) took its first loss of the season as Willamette’s Lauren Miller scored with 4:21 remaining to give the Bearcats a 2-1 victory at Salem, Ore.
Willamette is 3-3, 1-1 NWC.
•Idaho fired 34 shots but only one found its target as the Vandals lost 2-1 to Robert Morris at the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.
True freshman Desirae Hull scored her first career goal for Idaho.
•Denver defeated Gonzaga 3-0 at Boulder, Colo.
The Bulldogs are 4-5-0.
