Whitworth pulls it out

From wire and news services

Adam Anderson showed off his versatility and the Whitworth Pirates were the beneficiaries.

Anderson rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns, caught a pass for another score and returned a kickoff 82 yards for his fourth TD of the game to spark Whitworth (2-1) to a come-from-behind victory over the Chapman Panthers (1-1) in non-conference football action on Saturday in Orange, Calif.

Whitworth junior quarterback Mike Peck completed 12 of 21 passes for 168 yards and a TD with no interceptions in his first career start. Peck took over for Kory Kemp, who broke his fibula in a Sept. 20 loss to Redlands.

Whitworth led 27-20 at halftime, but trailed 35-33 late in the fourth quarter. The go-ahead score came with 51 seconds left when an Anderson fumble at the goal line was recovered in the end zone by Jimmy Hill. Milton Nelson, who also added a rushing TD in the second quarter, ran in the two-point conversion.

The Whits wrapped up the win when McLane Stone picked off a pass from Chapman QB Eric Marty deep in Pirates territory.

Western Washington 29, Dixie State 27: Josh Lider booted a 27-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Vikings (2-2, 2-1) to a victory over the Rebels (1-4, 1-3) in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play in Bellingham.

Western QB Adam Perry and receiver Pat McCann hooked up for three TDs. Perry hit McCann for 11- and 40-yard scores to stake the Vikings to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The pair connected again in the second quarter for a 96-yard TD. Perry passed for 423 yards, 232 of those to McCann who had eight catches.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 60, Puget Sound 7: Levell Coppage rushed 16 times for 95 yards and scored four TDs to power the defending Division III-champion and second-ranked Warhawks (3-0) to a non-conference win over the host Loggers (2-1) at Tacoma.
