Religion Notebook: Churches plan Holy Week, Easter Sunday services

Churches in the area are celebrating Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe St., will offer a Way of the Cross service on Good Friday at 3 p.m. An Easter service will be at 11 a.m.

•St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present a Maundy Thursday service, “The Story Told in Four Ritual Acts,” at 6 p.m. today. The church also will offer a traditional Passion and Prayers at noon, and a Holy Week story for children on Good Friday at 6 p.m.

There will be a Celtic Easter service Saturday at 7 p.m. that will include Scripture, song, darkness and light, community and dance.

The festival Eucharist service will be on Easter Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5810 S. Meadowlane Road, will offer a 7 p.m. worship service Maundy Thursday with the Lord’s Supper.

On Good Friday, the church will hold a Tenebrae, or service of darkness, at 7 p.m.

The church will celebrate Easter Sunday with a sunrise worship service at 7:30 a.m., outdoors if the weather is nice, an Easter breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and festival worship with the choir and a children’s message at 10 a.m.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2404 N. Howard St., will present an agape dinner on Maundy Thursday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a worship service at 7 p.m., and foot washing.

On Good Friday, the church will hold a Way of the Cross service at noon, and a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

Easter services will be at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A parish brunch and a children’s Easter egg hunt will be held between services.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., will offer Holy Communion and foot washing on Maundy Thursday at 7 p.m.

There will be a reflection and intercession service on Good Friday at 7 p.m., and an Easter Vigil on Saturday at 7 p.m., which will include a service of light, baptism and holy communion.

Easter services will be Sunday at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. and will include special music for choir, organ, brass and timpani.

Child care will be available for all services.

Christ the King Anglican Church, 3527 E. 29th Ave., will offer Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m., Good Friday service at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday worship at 9 a.m.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will offer an Agape dinner on Maundy Thursday at 6 p.m. Liturgy will follow the dinner at 7 p.m., and the church will offer an all-night vigil ending at noon on Good Friday.

On Good Friday, the church will present the Stations of the Cross at noon, and there will be a Good Friday liturgy at 7 p.m.

The Great Vigil of Easter will be at 7 p.m. Holy Saturday.

The church will celebrate choral Eucharist at 8 and 10:15 a.m. Easter Sunday, with an egg hunt for children afterward.

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will open the church for prayer today from noon to 12:45 p.m. On Good Friday, the church will be open from noon to 3 p.m. for prayer.

The church will hold an Easter Vigil service Saturday at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday service at 10 a.m.

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 3307 W. Rowan Ave., will present a Good Friday potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and worship at 7 p.m.

The church will offer an Easter breakfast and children’s egg hunt Easter Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Easter services will be at 7 and 10:30 a.m.

•The Interfaith Council will present its Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. Sunday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 211 N. Government Way.

The service will include a liturgy from the Iona community in Scotland.

The Rev. Andy CastroLang of Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ will preach on the topic, “Urgent, Action Required, Reply All,” and Bridget Cannon, the director of youth services will speak on behalf of Crosswalk/Volunteers of America.

The Manito United Methodist Church choir will perform.

Orthodox Holy Week

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., will begin its Holy Week celebrations Sunday with the Bridegroom Service on Palm Sunday, Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday. The services, all scheduled at 7 p.m., aim to help the faithful reflect on their readiness to meet Christ at His Second Coming as “The bridegroom who comes in the middle of the night.”

On Wednesday, the church will hold its Holy Unction service at 7 p.m., when church members will be anointed with sacramental oil for the healing of their souls and bodies.

Spokane City Forum

Spokane First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., will present the Spokane City Forum luncheon Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The forum presents speaker Bobbe Bridge, former Washington state Supreme Court justice and board president of the Center for Children and Youth Justice.

Bridge’s topic is, “Improving the Juvenile Justice System.”

Reservations are required by 4 p.m. Monday. The cost to attend is $10; $5 for students.

Architectural lecture

Gonzaga University will present, “St. Aloysius Church: Living History/Architectural Treasure” Wednesday at 6 p.m.

A reception will start the evening at 7 p.m. in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall on the Gonzaga campus. The lecture, featuring speaker Mac McCandless, will begin at 6:30 p.m. inside the church, 330 E. Boone Ave.

St. Aloysius Church has stood for almost 100 years.

Spiritual cinema

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present the movie, “Wondrous Oblivion,” Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The movie takes place in East London in the 1960s and is told by an 11-year-old who loves the game of cricket.
