Out & About

OUTCAST

Fishing is cure for March madness

With water temperatures rising and trout getting more active, it’s time to wean from TV hoops and anything else that lures an angler indoors.

The Spokesman-Review Outdoors Department is taking it to the (fishing) hole by rounding up forecasts, new information, hot tips and maps — the stuff anglers want to know.

Catch it all in “Fishing 2009,” a special section, coming Thursday.

OUTGROWTH

Big turnout tallied for Big Horn Show

Who’d have guessed that in the heart of the worst employment and economic outlook in memory, the Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show would attract the largest crowd in the event’s 49-year history.

A record 32,000 people attended the March 20-23 show at the Spokane Fair and Expo Center, said Wanda Clifford, executive director for the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council.

The club uses show proceeds for hunter education and wildlife conservation projects throughout this region.

OUTHUNT

Map covers northeast corner turkey areas

A new map available online helps turkey hunters locate much of Washington’s most productive public-land turkey hunting habitat.

The map, compiled by regional members of the National Wild Turkey Federation plus state and federal land management agencies, is a useful companion for hunters exploring the spring gobbler season in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties.

The map is compatible with Google Earth for terrain and satellite images. The map’s makers emphasize that it’s no substitute for scouting and getting permission to hunt on adjacent private lands.
