CV’s Beach handcuffs Ferris

Scotty Simon slugged a solo home run for the only run and senior J.T. Beach hurled a gem in his season debut as Central Valley edged Ferris 1-0 in a Greater Spokane League baseball game at CV Friday afternoon.

Beach, making his first appearance because of an injury, allowed two hits while striking out 13 Saxons (7-6) and hitting one. The only time he was in trouble was when Beau Bozett had a one-out triple in the second inning. Beach whiffed the next two batters to leave Bozett stranded.

Spencer Ansett pitched well enough to win for Ferris, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Second-place CV improved to 11-2.

•In other GSL games: Mead (9-2) pulled out a 9-6 win at Gonzaga Prep (6-5), getting consecutive doubles by Andy Larsen, Paul Miller and Nick Bond in a four-run sixth for a 7-4 lead. Jordan McInnis laced a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth that gave the Bullpups a 4-3 lead. … Brian Thomas hit a three-run double to highlight a four-run seventh that rallied Shadle Park (4-9) to a 7-4 win at Rogers (0-11). A single sandwiched between a pair of walks set the stage for Thomas’ hit, which gave him four RBIs for the day. … Billy Moon (3-0) allowed two singles and struck out 12 as league-leading University (9-1) blanked visiting North Central (1-10) 12-0. Michael Holmes slapped four singles, scored twice and drove in a run while Thomas Wakem had three hits, three RBIs and scored twice. … Brandon Baughman struck out four in three innings of scoreless relief as Mt. Spokane (6-5) broke through with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat visiting East Valley (4-7) 5-1. Cory Plaggerman had a run-scoring double to break the 1-1 tie and Baughman followed with a RBI single to help his cause.

•Inland Empire League: Zach Hull hit three home runs and drove in seven runs as Moscow (6-5, 3-3) swept a doubleheader at Lake City (7-8, 3-6), 10-2 and 8-5. Hull was 3 for 3 with two homers and four RBIs in the first game and added two hits in the second game. Jason Pettis had two hits and three RBIs for the Timberwolves in the second game.

•Great Northern League: A. J. Therrien threw a six-hitter and Travis Cooper drove in three runs with a pair of doubles to give Pullman (6-3, 5-3) a 9-0 win over visiting Clarkston. Brett Druffel also had a two-run double for the Greyhounds. The Bantams (5-2, 9-2) scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-6 win in the doubleheader split. Ryan Tacke paced Clarkston with a solo home run in the fifth and a two-run double in the seventh. Taylor Marshal had the big hit in the seventh, a three-run homer.

•Intermountain League: Michael Lacey scattered eight eights, striking out 12, as Orofino (10-2, 8-1) turned back visiting Kellogg (3-3, 1-3) 5-2. The Wildcats loaded the bases twice but did no damage as Lacey struck out the side once and whiffed two the other time. Frank Haskett had two hits and scored twice for the Maniacs.

•Non-league: Post Falls (5-10) swept a doubleheader at Lakeland (2-11), winning the first game 5-4 and the nightcap 8-4. Lakeland had a 4-1 lead in the first game after Kyle Cooper’s three-run double in the third inning, but the Trojans rallied with four runs in the sixth. Cody Clark hit a two-run single to tie the game and Cole Amende followed with a double for the winner. Brett Winn’s two-run triple in the three-run seventh iced the second game.

Boys soccer

Greater Spokane League: Erik Hanson dribbled through the Mt. Spokane defense to set up a first-half goal by Zach Hamer and Mead went on to a 2-0 win in the rivalry game. The Panthers (6-1, 6-1) did not allow the visiting Wildcats (1-6, 1-5) a shot on goal. … Holden Newberg’s cross to Brandon Stevens for a goal in the 20th minute proved to be the winner as Central Valley (7-1, 5-1) won 2-1 at East Valley (2-6, 2-4). Stevens also had CV’s first goal at 15 minutes. … Nathan Pelton scored two first-half goals as North Central (5-4, 3-2) posted a 2-0 win over Gonzaga Prep (3-6, 1-6) at Albi Stadium. … Five players scored as Ferris (5-3, 3-2) coasted to a 5-0 win at Rogers (1-8, 1-7). Issac Peter started the scoring at the 14-minute mark. … It took 29 minutes before Lewis and Clark could solve Shadle Park goalie Aaron Rusch, but once Mckenzie Olivares scored the dam broke and the Tigers (6-2, 6-0) rolled 9-1 at Albi. Olivares led the attack with three goals and an assist as LC had a 23-2 advantage in shots. Rusch made 14 saves for the Highlanders (2-7, 1-6).

Softball

Great Spokane League: Morgan Voelker had three hits and four RBIs and University (10-1) scored five runs in the seventh, just the cushion needed for a 10-6 win at Shadle Park (7-4). Katelyn Harvey blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for the Highlanders. … Alyssia Erickson was 3 for 3 and scored two runs and also struck out 12 to lead Central Valley (9-2) to an 8-2 win at East Valley (5-5). Alexa Morales had a three-run homer for the Bears. Echo Abramson drove in both runs for the Knights with a double. … Mt. Spokane (6-5) scored 18 runs in the sixth inning for a 24-4 win at Ferris (3-7). Chelsea Gray, Taryn Russell and Kaylene Peterson all drove in four runs, and Erin Olmstead had a grand slam in the big inning. … Leadoff hitter Rachel Head had four singles and four stolen bases and No. 9 hitter Tashi Eldore broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the fourth as Lewis and Clark (3-8) won 4-1 at Gonzaga Prep (3-8). … Samantha Pryor had two doubles, scored twice and drove in three runs as North Central (4-7) scored 10 runs in the first two innings and held on for a 10-7 win over visiting Mead (9-2). Kasara Wise and Lauren Hyatt each drove in two for the Indians. Emma Barrington had a double and triple for the Panthers, knocking in three runs.

•Great Northern League: Erika Hanson struck out 15 in a one-hitter and Bena Perisho had a three-run home run as Pullman (8-3, 5-1) won 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Clarkston (6-5, 4-2). Amy Sterk hit two home runs in the second game and finished with five RBIs as the Greyhounds won the second game 12-6. Becca Holmbo added a solo home run. Riley Swans had three hits and two RBI for the Bantams.

•Non-league: Richelle Ashburn had a three-run homer in the third and a two-run double in the sixth as Post Falls (14-3) defeated Lakeland (7-5) 10-0 on Blake Meredith’s one-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader. She added a two-run homer in the second game, won by the Trojans 5-3 when Kaycie Gibson’s two-run double in the seventh broke a tie.

Track and field

Lakeland Relays: Timberlake’s boys rolled up 119 points to beat Freeman by 21. Every event was scored as a relay, including the field events. Lakeland was third with 82. For the girls, Lakeland had 116, Freeman 109 and Timberlake 98.

Girls golf

Chewelah invitational: Jessie Merwin shot an 84 to lead Sandpoint to the team title. The Bulldogs had a score of 273 to beat Deer Park by 27. Merwin beat Deer Park’s Kelsey Dutton by four strokes.
