Pilots rally, win series with Zags

The University of Portland scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat No. 22 Gonzaga 5-4 on Sunday in Portland, sending the Bulldogs to their first series defeat of the season.

Tyson Van Winkle’s two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning gave Gonzaga (25-12, 7-5 West Coast Conference) a 4-3 lead, but Kris Kauppila’s two-run double in the bottom of the inning gave the Pilots the victory.

•Cody Bartlett’s RBI double in the 11th inning gave Washington State an 8-7 victory over Arizona at Bailey-Brayton Field, completing a three-game sweep.

The conference series sweep was the first for the Cougars (18-16, 8-4 Pac-10) since 1997.

Down 7-5 with two outs in the ninth, WSU’s Jay Ponciano hit a two-run double to force extra innings.

•UCLA’s four-run seventh broke open a tight game as the Bruins beat Washington 6-3 in Los Angeles to complete a three-game sweep.

The Huskies fell to 14-22, 4-8 Pac-10.

Softball

The fourth-ranked Washington softball team completed a weekend sweep of Oregon State with a 7-1 Pac-10 win in Corvallis, Ore.

Ashley Charters and Morgan Stuart each had three hits in the Huskies’ 11-hit attack to back Danielle Lawrie’s three-hit, nine-strikeout performance.

Washington (34-7, 7-4) moved into a second-place tie in the Pac-10 standings.

•Whitworth batters were limited to a total of five hits in a Northwest Conference doubleheader sweep by No. 7 Willamette, with the Bearcats winning 5-0 and 8-0 at Diana Marks Field.

The Pirates dropped to 15-17, 11-11 NWC.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (28-7) won twice at a crossover tournament in Yakima, beating Grays Harbor 9-3 and Chemeketa 2-1.

Against Grays Harbor, Alex Cey hit her first college homer, a two-run shot in the second, and Shelby Bethel (6-0) struck out five. In the second game, Jessica Solbrack struck out two batter with the bases loaded to end a threat.

The Sasquatch went 4-1 at the tournament.

Rowing

Washington State’s women’s second varsity eight completed an undefeated weekend with a victory over Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

The varsity eight lost its third race of the weekend Sunday, while the novice eight beat the Buckeyes.

Golf

Kevin Tucker finished tied for 26th place, finishing at even-par 210, to lead the Washington State men’s golf team at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif.

The Cougars posted a team score of 33-over 873 to finish in 15th place in the 17-team event.

Washington’s Nick Taylor was the top individual finisher, finishing at 7-under 203, and the Huskies took the team title, finishing at 36-under and beating second-place Southern California by 15 strokes.
