Stallworth apologizes to Reyes’ family

NFL: Suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth feels he has done “irreparable harm” to the family of the man he killed while driving drunk and said he is ready to accept whatever ruling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell makes on his future.

Stallworth, suspended indefinitely by the league for killing Mario Reyes while driving drunk in Miami, met with Goodell in New York on Wednesday about a possible reinstatement.

Stallworth was recently released from jail after serving 24 days for the DUI conviction.

In a public statement released Thursday, Stallworth apologized for his actions and vowed to conduct himself “in a manner that more accurately reflects who I am and meets the high standard expected of all NFL players.”

Callers threaten Roethlisberger accuser: The woman who has accused Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of raping her at a Lake Tahoe, Nev., hotel-casino where she worked told authorities she has received dozens of threatening and harassing phone calls.

In a police report filed with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, the 31-year-old woman said she has received “well over 100” annoying messages since she filed a civil suit against the football star on July 17 in Washoe District Court in Reno.

The woman said people have left phone messages calling her a “whore” and threatening that “something’s going to happen” if she did not drop the lawsuit, according to the police report filed July 30.

Sanchez makes his mark: Mark Sanchez outplayed Kellen Clemens in the New York Jets’ green-white scrimmage at Cortland, N.Y., possibly giving him the slight edge in the team’s closely contested quarterback competition.

Sanchez, the fifth overall draft pick from Southern California, was 9 of 15 for 70 yards in the team’s annual full-contact session. Clemens, a fourth-year veteran, was 5 of 7 for 26 yards.

In other camp news: The San Francisco 49ers won’t comment on an online report that top draft choice Michael Crabtree, a receiver out of Texas Tech, is willing to hold out the entire season; the Tennessee Titans will honor slain former quarterback Steve McNair by wearing a No. 9 decal on their helmets this season, starting with Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game against Buffalo; New England obtained defensive end Derrick Burgess after the two-time Pro Bowl player held out of Oakland’s training camp in hopes of being traded; Cleveland guard Rex Hadnot was carted off the practice field after suffering a possible serious injury to his left knee; and Green Bay tight end Tory Humphrey broke his forearm in practice and will have surgery today.

Harrington rediscovers swing

Golf: Padraig Harrington feels good enough about his swing to concentrate on his results, and it finally paid off in the Bridgestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio, with a 6-under-par 64 for a two-shot lead.

Harrington has not won a sanctioned tournament since last year at the PGA Championship. The 64 gave him a two-shot lead over Scott Verplank, Tim Clark and Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand.

Tiger Woods kept alive his streak of breaking par in the opening round for the 11th straight time at Firestone, where he is going for his seventh victory on the tree-lined course. He shot 68.

Phil Mickelson played bogey-free on his back nine and picked up three birdies to salvage a round of even-par 70.

Pampling overcomes wind: Rod Pampling shot a 5-under 67 in swirling mountain wind to take the first-round lead in the Legends Reno-Tahoe (Nev.) Open, a stroke ahead of a group that included two-time winner Vaughn Taylor and former Nevada player Rich Barcelo.

Thompson, Korda advance: Florida teen stars Alexis Thompson and Jessica Korda advanced to the U.S. Women’s Amateur quarterfinals, winning second- and third-round matches at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.
