Auditions

“Chess in Concert” – Spokane Civic Theatre, Friday, 6:30 p.m., at the theater, 1020 N. Howard St. Needed: 12-15 men and 12-15 women. Spokane Symphony Chorale – Auditions by appointment Sunday-Monday to fill vacancies in all sections. Auditions will consist of a prepared solo of the participant’s choice (accompanist provided; bring two copies), vocalizations to determine range, one sight reading exercise, and imitations of short tonal passages and rhythms given by the conductor. North Idaho College ChoirsJazz Company – Monday and Aug. 31, 7-9 p.m., in Boswell Hall Room 128. Familiarity with jazz vocal style is recommended. Concert Choir – Tuesday and Sept. 1, 7-9:30 p.m., in Boswell Hall Room 102. Auditions will consist of singing a simple folk-type melody and various vocal exercises to evaluate musicianship, vocal range and aptitude. Madrigal Singers – Tuesday and Sept. 1, 4:30-6:15 p.m., in Boswell Hall Room 102. Auditions will focus on evaluating music reading and learning skills, vocal range and aptitude and ability to blend within a small choral ensemble. Held at North Idaho College, 1000 W. “Painting Post Falls” – Two-day watercolor workshop, Saturday-Sunday. Students will learn how to sketch and paint scenes around Post Falls. Cost is $100, supplies not included. Call (208) 457-8950 to reserve a spot and obtain a list of supplies needed.

Dog Days Music Workshops Guitar Workshop – For aspiring guitarists and singer-songwriters ages 12-18. Language of Music – How to listen to the audience, think of music as a conversation, develop a comfortable stage presence and more. Life is Music – Interactive class based on song form, theory, use of instrumentation and arrangement. The Opera Workshop – Students will listen to an aria being performed, then will be asked to sing and critiqued. Also covers dealing with stage fright. All classes run simultaneously on Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Sand Creek Inn, 105 S. First Ave., Sandpoint. Tuition is $100 per class (must choose one). 2009 Governor’s Arts and Heritage Awards – Nominations are being accepted to honor outstanding artists, arts organizations, arts educators, supporters and cultural leaders in Washington state. Call for writers

Amy Woodward Fisher World Day of Poetry Contest – Sponsored by Poetry Scribes of Spokane. Seeking original unpublished poems of 60 lines or less. Poets 18 and older may submit up to two poems in each category: rhymed and free verse.
