Buffalo signs top pick

Associated Press

Buffalo Bills rookie first-round draft pick Aaron Maybin has signed a five-year contract.

Capping four weeks of negotiations, the defensive end was at the team’s headquarters to sign on Friday afternoon, his agent, Chafie Fields, told the Associated Press. “Aaron’s happy to be here and ready to go to work,” Fields said.

Financial terms were not immediately available.

Maybin was drafted 11th overall out of Penn State.

Roethlisberger travels

Ben Roethlisberger has traveled with the Pittsburgh Steelers for this weekend’s exhibition game in Washington, a further sign the quarterback’s right foot injury is not serious.

The team did not issue an injury update before leaving, but Roethlisberger is not expected to play tonight against the Redskins. He was hurt Thursday in practice.

•In other news, Roethlisberger’s lawyers say the woman accusing him of raping her at Lake Tahoe, Nev., last summer is “disturbed and calculating” and fabricated the assault to extort a big payoff from the Steelers quarterback.

This comes a day after her lawyer, Cal Dunlap, asked a judge to sanction Roethlisberger’s lawyers because he said they are trying to “bully” her into dropping her suit.

Carolina back fined

The NFL has fined Carolina Panthers running back Mike Goodson $7,500 for making a throat slash gesture after scoring a touchdown in Monday’s exhibition game against the New York Giants.

Goodson is a fourth-round pick from Texas A&M.

Titans’ Davis gets DUI

Tennessee Titans receiver Chris Davis has been charged with DUI after being stopped by police for speeding in downtown Nashville.

Davis consented to a breath alcohol test, which registered 0.11. The level of intoxication in Tennessee is 0.08.

Preseason games

Vikings 17, Chiefs 13: At Minneapolis, Brett Favre’s debut was a dud in terms of on-field action, a predictably brief preseason performance in the 17-13 victory by Minnesota over Kansas City. Cheered loudly by the same fans who used to loathe him when he played for Green Bay, Favre played two series and went 1 for 4 for 4 yards.

Cowboys 30, Titans 10: At Arlington, Texas, Tony Romo looked right at home in the first football game at the nearly $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium, going 18 of 24 for 192 yards in Dallas’ win over Tennessee.

The Cowboys (1-1) gained 249 yards and 17 first downs in the first half.

Falcons 20, Rams 13: At St. Louis, Atlanta’s starters were flawless. St. Louis starters had no answer, even against the second-stringers.

Michael Turner accounted for all but 12 yards on the opening 77-yard drive and Matt Ryan was 7 for 8 for 81 yards with a touchdown pass for Atlanta.
