Awarded Linebacker Rolando McClain was in coach Nick Saban’s office doing a TV interview Tuesday morning when football legend Dick Butkus strolled in to surprise him with the Butkus Award given annually to the nation’s top linebacker.

Hired The Portland State Vikings have named Nevada defensive coordinator Nigel Burton as their new head coach. Burton replaces Jerry Glanville, who resigned last month after going 9-24 over three seasons at Portland State. The Vikings were 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the Big Sky this past season. Burton was an assistant at Portland State under Tim Walsh in 2001 and 2002.

Fined A person in the NFL tells the Associated Press that Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco has been fined $30,000 for donning a poncho and sombrero after scoring a touchdown. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not made any announcement about the fine.

Sidelined World Cup slalom champion Jean-Baptiste Grange will miss next year’s Vancouver Olympics because of a knee injury that will force him to undergo an operation. Grange ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a World Cup giant slalom last week in Beaver Creek, Colo.

•The season is over for Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis, after he suffered a concussion in a Nov. 8 game against Atlanta.

•Tampa Bay kick returner Clifton Smith will miss the rest of the season after his second concussion in less than two months.

•Philadelphia goalie Ray Emery will undergo surgery today to repair a torn muscle in his lower abdomen, and is expected to miss about six weeks. The Flyers, who have lost five straight games and eight of nine, recalled goalie Johan Backlund from the Adirondack Phantoms, but will rely heavily on Brian Boucher.

•The Indiana Pacers have lost scoring leader Danny Granger for at least four weeks with a foot injury. The team said that Granger would miss a minimum of four to six weeks with a torn right plantar fascia, the tissue across the bottom of the foot connecting the heel and toes.
