WSU, UW both lose by 30

Jayne Appel scored 25 points and No. 7 Stanford beat Washington State 76-46 Friday night, remaining unbeaten in all 48 women’s basketball games against the Cougars since they started playing each other in 1983.

Jillian Harmon added 13 points for Stanford (18-4, 9-1 Pac-10), which won its fifth straight since a loss at California.

April Cook scored 11 points to lead Washington State (9-12, 2-8).

Appel, who sat out much of the second half, made 10 of 14 shots and added nine rebounds.

California 70, Washington 40: Conference scoring leader Ashley Walker scored seven of her 24 points in the first 5 minutes of the second half and the third-ranked Bears recovered from a sluggish first 20 minutes to rout the Huskies in Seattle.

The Bears (19-3, 10-0 Pac-10) continued to improve on the best conference start in school history thanks to Walker’s dominant play inside. Walker scored 11 of Cal’s first 20 in the second half, turning a nine-point halftime lead into a comfortable 20-point cushion in just 7 minutes.

Washington (5-15, 1-9) was led by 12 points from Christina Rozier, but dropped a school-record ninth straight.

Louisiana Tech 70, Idaho 60: Shanavia Dowdell and Adrienne Johnson each scored 18 points to lead the Lady Techsters to the win over the visiting Vandals in Western Athletic Conference action at Ruston, La.

With the victory, Tech (12-10, 5-3) completed the regular-season sweep of the Vandals (8-11, 5-3) and pulled even with them in the WAC standings heading into Sunday’s matchup against Boise State.

Yinka Olorunnife and Derisa Taleni each scored 18 points for Idaho.

Willamette 73, Whitworth 64: The Bearcats’ surprising resurgence in NWC play continued with an easy road victory against the listless Pirates.

Whitworth (11-9, 5-6) trailed 36-26 at halftime. The Pirates trimmed their deficit to 43-41 early in the second half, but they ultimately were undermined by 34 percent shooting (23 for 67).

Willamette (4-13, 3-8) won its third game in a row after losing 13 of its first 14 contests. The Bearcats hadn’t won two consecutive conference games in the past four years.

Liz Horiatis led Whitworth with 18 points. Molly Fillion paced Willamette with 20 points and 17 rebounds.
