Benefit at Northern Highlights

The Northern Highlights Salon and Body Spa, 8475 Government Way, Suite 201, in Hayden, is holding a Spa Sampler Day today, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The sample treatments include massage, anti-aging, facials, skin care, tanning, paraffin dips, manicures and foot massages.

Sample treatments are $5 each or 5 for $20.

Proceeds will benefit the Women’s Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Land-use proposal topic of meeting

A public hearing regarding a request to Bonner County Commissioners to amend the county’s plan use map to allow for future development of a subdivision in southwestern Bonner County will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the (former) Federal Building, in the meeting room, 1500 Highway 2 in Sandpoint.

The project, sponsored by Paradise Valley Estates LLC, proposes to change the county’s projected land use map from agriculture/forest land to rural residential, in order to seek future approval for subdivision development.

Backcountry films at NIC

The Backcountry Film Festival will be Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Meyer Health and Sciences Building, Room 100, at North Idaho College. The event is put on by NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits program, in conjunction with the Winter Wildlands Alliance.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a number of films from grassroots filmmakers.

Cost is $10 for adults or $7 for students. Tickets are available in the Outdoor Pursuits Office on the lower level of the Edminster Student Union Building.

Lions Club to honor Patty Duke

Lions Clubs International, District 37N, will present Patty Duke with Special Recognition on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce, in the Visitors Center, 105 N. First St. Duke will arrive at 5:30 p.m.

She is being recognized by the Lions Club for her contributions to her community through her online Web site, Center for Mental Wellness, and her global outreach to the deaf and the blind in her role as Helen Keller in the Miracle Worker.

Children’s Village benefit dinner planned Thursday

The “Iron Dog” Race for Kids benefit dinner for the Children’s Village will be Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Inn, 506 W. Appleway Ave. at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30.

The dinner welcomes back Team No. 9 from Coeur d’Alene. The team competed in the Iron Dog Race that began Feb. 8 in Wasilla, Alaska, and ended 3,000 miles later in Fairbanks, Alaska. The team raised money for Children’s Village through pledges and supporters.

Tickets for the benefit dinner are $25 per person.

NAMI to offer family classes

The Coeur d’Alene affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is holding a family-to-family education program for families of people diagnosed with serious mental illness.

The 12-week series will be held at Kootenai Medical Center, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., and will begin March 1.

NIC’s Kathie O’Brien honored

North Idaho College Business and Office Technology instructor Kathie O’Brien was recently presented the Western Business Education Association Outstanding Career and Technical Student Organization Adviser Award.

O’Brien has been on staff at NIC since 2000. She has been key in establishing a chapter of the business education organization Business Professionals of America at NIC. She serves as the NIC chapter adviser and under her leadership, NIC students have earned numerous BPA awards and have been elected to offices at state and national levels.

O’Brien received the 2006-07 BPA National Outstanding Service Award. She also earned the 2005 Idaho Postsecondary Business Teacher of the Year Award through the Idaho Business Education Association.
