Terrace houses Parkside Event Center

Coeur d’Alene has long been renowned as the wedding capital of the Northwest. Valentine’s Day was an obvious example as couples and their entourage practically lined up at the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel. Check out “wedding” topics in the Yellow Pages and “Marriages” in the court reports to see that the activity far outweighs the population proportion.

In the Yellow Pages you also see many locations for wedding celebrations. And how better than to take advantage of the lake.

Such is the case with the Parkside Event Center in the Parkside condominiums downtown. This impressive, 20-story complex offers a 4,500-square-foot area for gatherings that seat 100 people inside and 75 outside on the third-floor terrace overlooking the lake, McKuen Park and Tubbs Hill. Check www.parksidecda.com or phone Allison Brigham at 664-1773.

New residents are moving into floors 5 through 20, where 35 of the 53 units are sold and five are in the closing process. The remainder range from $495,000 for a 1,909-square-foot, two-bedroom unit to $2,150,000 for a 4,100-square-foot penthouse on level 18. Contact Century 21 Beutler & Associates at 765-5554.

All the plaza level retail shops are leased. Bakery by the Lake has just added an omelet bar, Mix.It.Up, a home furnishings shop, plans to open near the end of the month and is planning an open house for March 20. Fratelli’s Salon and Spa plans to open in early spring; check www.fratellisalon.com.

Parkside Fitness mind and body studio has opened on the second floor with yoga, pilates, core conditioning, strength training, pre/postnatal classes and ballroom dancing. Check www.parksidefitness.com or phone 818-5883.

Also on the second floor is North Idaho Title with Miller-Stauffer Architects moving from neighboring McKuen Terrace to 4,000 square feet in May. Nighthawk Radiology Services occupies 26,000 square feet on Floors 2, 3 and 4.

The remaining 4,000 square feet of commercial space is planned for an upscale restaurant on the plaza level. Contact Monte Miller at 664-1773.

Pizza Factory coming to Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene will get a Pizza Factory in early March as franchise owner Jan Speelman adds his fourth and largest store. His first was in St. Maries in 1994 followed by stores in Hayden and Post Falls. The new store is in the former Pizza Shoppe space in Appleway Square at Highway 95 and Appleway. It originally was a Roundtable Pizza.

The menu includes hand-tossed pizza, pasta, sandwiches, calzone, salads, soups, appetizers and combinations. With its start in 1979 and its headquarters in Oakhurst, Calif., Pizza Factory has 140 stores in 10 Western states.

Speelman came from Southern Idaho in 1993. Family members are among about 60 employees in his four stores, which will have 19 employees in Coeur d’Alene. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The refurbished store seats 145 customers with a game room a private event room.

This week’s tidbits

•An intriguing list of cooking classes is being offered at the Greenbriar Inn in Coeur d’Alene through March and April. They include titles of Sauces, Thai Cooking, English High Tea, Culinary Tour of Italy, French Cuisine Simplified, Pairing Wines with Ingredients, Entertaining with a Limited Budget, Make-Ahead Meals, Filled Pastas amd Pastries and Handling Meats and Poultry. Phone 667-9660.

•My “Johns” in NIC journalism get teased a bit about their name. The “water closet” John comes from John Harrington, who invented the indoor toilet in 1596. Also called the “loo,” that comes from the French “garde a l’eau” (watch out for the water) when the water closets would be tossed from the window to the street below.
