Spokane team claims state title

The Spokane Jr. Chiefs Pee Wee team is headed to the Pacific District Championships in Seattle March 4-8 after winning the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association State Tier II title last weekend in the 12-and-under division at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane defeated the Seattle Starz 6-2 in the championship game of the division that also included the Tri-City Jr. Americans and Kent Valley Selects.

Members of the Jr. Chiefs are Tanner Moyer, Austin Azzinnaro, Kienan Scott, Erich Jaeger, Mitchell Knoles, Graham Gustafson, Jonny Marzec, Austin Breen, Brady Simmelink, Zack Day, Thomas Peach, Connor McKenna, Josh Fisher, Joey Porco, Alex Bowdish and Ian Andres.

Mark Gustafson is the head coach, assisted by Ian Scott and Gus Porco.

The Yakima Hawks won the 14-and-under Bantam division and the SnoKing Jr. Thunderbirds from Seattle won the 18-and-under Midget division in the tournament.

Neither Spokane team in those divisions advanced to the playoffs, although the Midget team went 2-1 in pool play to tie for second in its pool.

Bowling

Chris Gray picked the wrong time to cool off and Alex Earle capitalized, collecting a 203-155 victory in the championship match of the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Fun Spot at Fairchild Air Force Base last Sunday.

Gray qualified third in the five-person finals field and turned in two solid victories before taking on the top-seeded Earle.

Curtis Lindeman, who had the day’s high game, a 254, and was in his first roll-off, finished third; Kyle Casey was fourth; and Nathan Rawley fifth.

Megan Froman had high game for the girls, a 193.

The next JBT is March 8 at Deer Park.

Soccer

Three North Idaho College men’s players have signed letters of intent with NCAA Division II schools, Cardinals coach Scott Moorcroft announced.

Midfielder Renatto Brito, an NJCAA All-American and two-time Region 18 all-star, will transfer to Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.

Forward Cole Abramson from East Valley and defender Boone Femrite signed with Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. Abramson had 11 goals and three assists at NIC and Femrite was a two-time All-Region 18 selection.

All are sophomores.
