Scully leads rankings

Vin Scully leads the Top 50 Sportscasters, selected by the American Sportscasters Association. Joining Scully in the top 10 are Mel Allen, Red Barber, Curt Gowdy, Howard Cosell, Bob Costas, Jim McKay, Keith Jackson, Al Michaels and Dick Enberg.

Scully will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ booth this year, his 60th season at the team microphone.

College football

It just doesn’t add up

College bowl game results suggest the Big Ten has inferior talent. NFL teams say differently.

A Chicago Tribune study revealed the talent in the Big Ten, in NFL terms, is superior to the talent in the Pac-10 and Big 12. The only conferences with advantages over the Big Ten are the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In the last five drafts, 166 Big Ten players were chosen, third highest among conferences. The SEC led the way with 192 players, followed by the ACC with 176. The Pac-10 had 157 while the Big 12 had 143.

If you break it down to first-rounders, the Big Ten also fared well. The conference has had 28 such players in the last five drafts.

That makes it difficult to explain a 1-6 Big Ten record in bowl games this year (losses to three teams from the Big 12, and one each from the SEC, Pac-10 and ACC), and a 9-20 mark over the last five years.

Morrison to be on move?

Rick Bonnell, who covers the Charlotte Bobcats for the Charlotte Observer, took some time to address some of the more frequently posed questions he gets from fans via e-mail. Here’s one of local interest:

Q: Who’s the most likely Bobcat to be traded next?

That’s really two questions: Which Bobcat is most available? And which Bobcat is most attractive to other teams?

I believe team management would be very receptive to moving the contract of either Adam Morrison or Matt Carroll. Neither one starts, except as an injury fill-in, and that’s a huge financial investment in backups with redundant skill sets.

The question is whether other teams would accept one of those contracts without sending a similar contract back to Charlotte.
