Timberline to sell clothing, shoes in old Red Oak space

The 40,000- square-foot space that had been Red Oak Clothing in Silver Lake Mall will become Timberline Trading Company on Aug. 1. The south anchor originally was an Emporium store.

Owner Dave Knoll said Timberline will sell name-brand clothing and shoes at discount prices. It will feature casual comfort in Northwest styles.

Knoll came to Coeur d’Alene in 1975 and worked for White Elephant in Spokane before starting Black Sheep Sporting Goods. He later started Red Oak and still has Jake’s Dry Dock on Government Way. Black Sheep was voted the area’s favorite sporting goods store, and Jake’s Dry Dock features clothing with positive messages reflecting why “life is good,” Knoll said.

Hours at Timberline will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 to 6 Sundays. Knoll will have 12 employees.

Smokestack Landscape joins C Link

Smokestack Landscape Supply and C Link have combined on property formerly occupied by Hughes Greenhouses at 866 S. Spokane St. on the south side of the Spokane River in Post Falls. Smokestack is a new business, and C Link moved from 606 E. Fifth Ave.

Smokestack was named for the existing old smokestack that once was part of a system that provided hot water for the greenhouses, which mostly collapsed under last winter’s snow. With four employees and manager Jerry Wade, the company offers crushed rock, decorative rock and bark, sand, topsoil, fill dirt, compost and other landscape supplies. It also rents landscape equipment such as Bobcats and miniexcavators.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Check www.smokestack landscape.com. Phone (208) 777-7775.

Originally from Chicago, C Link manufactures and distributes cable assemblies. The company has about 15 employees. Phone (208) 457-8404.

This week’s tidbits

•Don’t miss Art on the Green at North Idaho College, Tastes of Coeur d’Alene and other sales in City Park and the open market on Sherman Avenue this coming weekend. It’s the area’s biggest weekend.

•The Bagpipers School also is this coming week at NIC. Last March 17, I followed the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City to where it disbanded and asked some Toronto bagpipers where I could buy a chanter (bagpipe flute) for my wife. They looked at the North Idaho College insignia on my shirt, and one said, “Well, you’re from Coeur d’Alene, where they have the biggest bagpipe school in the continent. Check there.” (I bought it online; we still haven’t figured out how to play it). I know: Go to the school.
