Local AA teams advance at state

Sean Scholer pitched seven shutout innings and Max Harris homered as the Cheney Summer Hawks advanced in the AA American Legion state tournament with a 6-0 win over North Kitsap at Cheney High School on Sunday.

Scholer allowed four hits and struck out three North Kitsap batters to earn the win. Harris’ 2-run homer in the third put the Summer Hawks ahead 3-0. Cheney takes on Graham-Kapowsin today at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game at Cheney HS.

•Mt. Spokane 5, Lakeside Newport 4 : Mt. Spokane jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and held on for a victory over Lakeside in a loser-out game at University. Kelly Fitzpatrick pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save. Mt. Spokane plays an elimination game against Yakima Valley today at 1:30 p.m. at U-Hi.

•University 4, Capital 2: Tyler Crawford pitched a complete game and drove in the decisive run in the sixth inning for the University Titans, as they defeated Capital in a loser-out game at University. John Schmedding had a 2-run homer and an RBI single for University, which plays Olympia in a loser-out game today at 10 a.m. at University HS.

•Kennewick Dusters 7, Ferris 2: After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Ferris Saxons were unable to keep pace with the Kennewick Dusters, losing an elimination game at Cheney HS. Ben Goodwin’s 2-run home run put Ferris ahead early, but the Dusters answered with runs in the next four innings to secure the win.

Swimming

Washington State University’s Rugile Mileisyte competed in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the swimming world championships in Rome. Competing for her home country of Lithuania, Mileisyte led off the relay with a split of 56.94 seconds. Her Lithuanian team failed to advance to the final, finishing 23rd out of 30 teams with a time of 3:54.97.
