Show blends opera, musical theater
‘Hot August Night’ features Boise baritone Detwiler
Spokane Opera has cooked up a cool blend of opera and musical theater for its annual production of “A Hot August Night.”
Boise baritone Jason Detwiler will be joined by several local singers including Heather Holzapfel, Kristy Ann Fox, Levi Waggoner, Victoria Perri, Rachel Packard, Jordan Taylor and Michelle Perrier.
They’ll perform selections ranging from such operatic classics as “The Barber of Seville,” “The Marriage of Figaro” and “Carmen” to popular musicals including “The King and I,” “Camelot” and “Oklahoma!”
Dancers from Ballet Spokane also will perform. Greg Presley will provide piano accompaniment throughout the program, and flutist Bruce Bodden will join soprano Holzapfel for Adolphe Charles Adam’s “Bravura Variations,” based on “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
There again will be two performances: Wednesday at Mirabeau Meadows in the Spokane Valley, and Aug. 7 at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Browne’s Addition.
Both begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
