Rogers, Shadle meet for state

The Rogers Pirates and Shadle Park Highlanders are both one win away from a State 3A tournament berth. And one of them will capture that berth when they meet for the 3A East Regional championship Friday at Hanford High School.

Rogers 62, West Valley (Yakima) 61: Jesse Vaughn scored 24 points, including the go-ahead field goal with 10 seconds to play, to give the Pirates a victory over the Rams at Rogers High School. But the final 10 seconds were filled with drama.

Zach Nelson banked in his fourth 3-pointer of the game to bring Rogers to within 60-59 with 20 seconds remaining. The Pirates then tipped the ensuing inbounds pass off a West Valley player and out of bounds to regain the ball, with Vaughn scoring at the 10-second mark for a 61-60 Rogers lead.

West Valley’s Matt Borton, who finished with a game-high 26 points, drove the lane, where his shot was blocked by Vaughn. Borton protested the non-call and was assessed a technical foul. Vaughn sunk 1 of 2 free throws to put the Pirates up 62-60. On the ensuing inbounds play, Vaughn and Borton got tied up, with Vaughn being assessed a technical foul. Borton made the first free throw to bring the Rams within one, but missed the second. West Valley’s inbounds pass was stolen and Rogers clung to a victory.

Pat McCabe added 14 points and Nelson 12 for Rogers.

Shadle Park 60, Sunnyside 45: The Highlanders got 16 points, 14 rebounds and five assists from WSU-bound Anthony Brown to beat the Grizzlies at Rogers to punch their ticket to the title game.

Taylor Pettersen added 13 points and Matt Barnes 12 for Shadle Park.

Alfredo de La Barrera had 16 points and seven rebounds for Sunnyside.

Sunnyside and West Valley play Friday at 4:45 at Hanford High School in a loser-out game, followed by the Rogers-Shadle Park matchup for the No. 1 seed to state at 8:15.

The Sunnyside-West Valley survivor will play the Rogers-Shadle Park loser on Saturday in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.

Girls

Shadle Park 62, Hanford 40: Bianca Pope led four Highlanders in double figures with 18 points in a victory over the Falcons at Rogers.

Lindsay Niemeier added 12 points, Aleisha Hathaway 11, and Chelsea Chandler 10 to bring Shadle Park a win away from a state berth.

The Highlanders will play West Valley of Yakima on Friday at Hanford High School in a winner-to-state game.

West Valley (Yakima) 48, North Central 37: The Rams got 10 points from Erin Richardson to defeat the Indians in the other semifinal at Rogers.

North Central will play Hanford in the loser-out game Friday, with the winner to face the Shadle Park/West Valley loser Saturday for a state berth.
