Aging road being replaced

Construction on 14th Avenue should begin in May

Airway Height’s second busiest road, 14th Avenue, will soon be under construction, replacing the entire section from Lundstrom Street to Campbell Street.

Work on the aging stretch of road, which is part asphalt and part gravel, should begin by this May, said City Manager Albert Tripp.

The road runs near several city businesses including Yoke’s, the post office and United Rental.

“Other than Highway 2, this is probably the most utilized roadway in the city itself,” Tripp said.

The project will be carried out using both city and federal money; $52,000 and $731,000, respectively.

City officials hope the new construction will help take the burden off Highway 2, which runs parallel to 14th Avenue. As traffic continues to increase along the highway with the rising growth of the city, an alternative route to the highway will be much needed in the years to come.

“This is a project that could provide additional capacity to Highway 2,” Tripp said.

This road construction comes in step with several other Airway Heights road improvements, as a part of an overall federal stimulus project the city is completing.

Other road projects on the horizon include the reconstruction of Lawson Street. Also up for construction are plans turning some of the major intersections along Highway 2 into roundabouts.
