A-Rod surgery ‘as planned’

Alex Rodriguez’s surgery to repair his right hip labrum went “as planned,” hip specialist Marc Philippon said Monday.

Philippon performed the operation on Rodriguez on Monday morning at Vail Valley Surgery Center in Vail, Colo. It went so smoothly, Philippon said in a midday conference call with reporters, that A-Rod was slated to check out of the hospital and ride the stationary bike that afternoon.

“The surgery went exactly as we planned,” said Philippon. “We will start him on his rehab this afternoon. There were no surprises – exactly what we prepared for.”

Philippon removed the “pincer” impingement, stabilized cartilage, repaired the labrum tear and debrided the lining of the cyst. It took 80 minutes.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said: “That’s good the surgery went well. You just hope the rehab goes as well as the surgery.”

Rodriguez is expected to need six to nine weeks to return to game action with the Yankees.
