Gators bite Dolphins

Nick Calathes broke out of a shooting slump with 19 points, Chandler Parsons added 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Florida beat Jacksonville 84-62 Wednesday night at Gainesville, Fla., in the opening round of the NIT.

The Gators shot 63 percent from the field, were 6 of 9 from 3-point range and had a 21-point lead at the break.

The Gators will host Miami in the second round Friday.

Miami 78, Providence 66: Jack McClinton made seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points as the Hurricanes beat the Friars at Providence, R.I.

Miami (19-12) outrebounded Providence 44-35.

Kansas State 83, Illinois State 79 (OT): Jacob Pullen scored seven of his career-high 32 points in overtime to lead the Wildcats over the Redbirds at Manhattan, Kan.

Dominique Sutton finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, including an offensive grab he put back to tie the game at 73 with 4 seconds remaining and force the overtime.

Creighton 73, Bowling Green 71: P’Allen Stinnett scored 18 points, including two big free throws in the final minute, and the Bluejays came from behind to beat the Falcons at Omaha, Neb.

Baylor 74, Georgetown 72: LaceDarius Dunn and Kevin Rogers each scored 20 points and Curtis Jerrells added 19 to help the Bears get their first postseason win since 1950 over the Hoyas at Waco, Texas.

Tulsa 68, Northwestern 59: At Tulsa, Okla., Jerome Jordan scored 16 points and Ben Uzoh added 13, including four free throws in the final 21 seconds, as the Golden Hurricane (25-10) won their first game in the tournament since winning the title in 2001.

Virginia Tech 116, Duquesne 108 (2OT): Virginia Tech got 33 points from A.D. Vassallo and 23 from Jeff Allen and the Hokies scored on their first five possessions in the second overtime at Blacksburg, Va., to overcome 46 points from the Dukes’ Aaron Jackson.

Auburn 87, Tennessee-Martin 82: DeWayne Reed scored 23 points and Quantez Robertson added 19 – both career highs – to lead the Tigers over the Skyhawks at Auburn, Ala.

Reed made five 3-pointers for the Tigers (23-11), who hit a season-high 14 from beyond the arc.
