Waves complete sweep of WSU

Scott Alexander pitched two-hit ball for six innings Wednesday to lead 17th-ranked Pepperdine to a 5-2 non-conference baseball win over Washington State at Malibu, Calif.

Alexander (2-2) struck out nine, walked two and allowed one earned run, on Jared Prince’s RBI double in the first inning.

The Waves (13-5) went ahead for good with a three-run first off Paris Shewey (1-1), who made his first collegiate start.

The Cougars (5-11) left the bases loaded in the seventh after Alex Burg’s one-out RBI on a hit by pitch.

Pepperdine swept the two-game series.

Women’s golf

Freshman Kayla Mortellaro recorded her first collegiate victory and led Idaho to second place at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at Honolulu.

Mortellaro shot a final-round 75 to finish at 3-over-par 219 for a one-shot victory.

The Vandals finished at 913 to trail champion Texas A&M by six shots in the 12-team field.

Swimming

Whitworth junior Natalie Turner finished 11th in the women’s 500-yard freestyle during the first day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Turner finished in a school- and Northwest Conference-record 4 minutes, 57.30 seconds.

Men’s basketball

Whitworth senior Ross Nakamura was selected to the D3hoops.com all-region third team.

Nakamura averaged 12.1 points and 4.9 assists per game for the 23-6 Pirates, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
