Zags double their pleasure

It took an unlikely hero and an unlikely upset to make Gonzaga University a double winner Saturday in the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

The GU men, on the strength of freshman Demetri Goodson’s running bank shot with 0.9 seconds remaining, defeated Western Kentucky 83-81 in Portland to reach the tournament’s Sweet 16. The Zags advance to Memphis, Tenn., where they will meet No. 1 seed North Carolina on Friday in the South Regional semifinals.

The GU women, who entered the Oklahoma City Regional as the No. 12 seed, defeated No. 5 seed Xavier 74-59 in Seattle for the Zags’ first NCAA tournament win in school history. Heather Bowman scored 23 points to lead GU, which faces Pittsburgh on Monday in the tournament’s second round.
