Kalee Whipple had 15 points and eight rebounds, all the while playing tough defense on Villanova star Laura Kurz, and the Utes overwhelmed the poor-shooting Wildcats in a first-round game.

Morgan Warburton – like Kurz, a finalist for the Naismith Trophy as national player of the year – scored 14 for ninth-seeded Utah (23-9).

Kurz led eighth-seeded Villanova (19-14) with 11 points, going 0-for-7 on 3-point attempts.

The Jackrabbits made a record-tying 16 3-point shots in their NCAA tournament debut in a win over the Horned Frogs.

South Dakota State matched the tournament mark for 3s set by Harvard in 1996.

Jill Young and Kristin Rotert scored 17 points to lead the Jackrabbits and extend their win streak to 18 games.

Helena Sverrisdottir scored 12 points to lead TCU.

Jessica Morrow and Melissa Jones each hit two free throws in the final 23 seconds of overtime and the Bears beat the Roadrunners without coach Kim Mulkey.

Mulkey was hospitalized earlier in the day after suffering a reaction to medication she was taking following removal of a kidney stone Friday.

Amber Gregg scored 23 points for UTSA.

At Storrs, Conn.

Tina Charles scored 32 points and Renee Montgomery added 19 – all in the first half – to help the top-seeded Huskies roll to past the Catamounts.

It was the sixth time that Connecticut scored over 100 points in an NCAA tournament.

Sha Brooks scored 18 points to lead the Gators into the second round, where they will face Connecticut.

Marshae Dotson added 13 points, and Steffi Sorensen had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Gators, who led just 43-39 in the second half before scoring nine straight to take control.

At South Bend, Ind.

The Gophers started the game by making 11 of 13 shots and opened a 14-point first-half lead, then used timely 3-point shooting to hold off the Fighting Irish.

Emily Fox scored 23 points and Katie Ohm added 15 to pace the Gophers, who shot 49 percent from the field.

The Aggies forced a season-high 30 turnovers, leading to 43 points, and Danielle Gant scored 21 to lead the victory.

Michigan State’s Mia Johnson made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with just over a minute left and the Spartans held on to advance to the second round.

After Johnson’s 3-ponter, Brandi Brown made a layup to get the Blue Raiders within one, but Middle Tennessee didn’t get a shot off after calling a time out with 10 seconds left.

Chante Black led the Blue Devils’ balanced offense with 14 points as Duke defeated the Lady Govs. Emily Pollock scored 13 and Nicole Jamen had 10 for Austin Peay.

Alison Lacey made six 3-pointers and Iowa State joined South Dakota State with a tournament-record 16 3-pointers.

Danielle Robinson scored 15 points, Ashley Paris added 14 and the top-seeded Sooners overcame a sluggish start to beat Prairie View A&M.

Courtney Paris had 11 points and 16 rebounds for Oklahoma.

Jacqua Williams scored 23 points and 6-foot-5 freshman Sasha Goodlett came up big in her NCAA tournament debut with 16 points and 13 rebounds, leading the Yellow Jackets over the Hawkeyes.

Angel McCoughtry and Candyce Bingham each scored 12 points in a short night’s work, leading the Cardinals over the Lady Flames.

Louisville led by as many as 31 midway through the second half, allowing it to keep their starters well-rested in advance of Tuesday’s second-round game against sixth-seeded LSU.

Megan Frazee, who averaged 20.3 points in leading Liberty to a Big South title, managed only eight points.
