Solbrack helps CCS earn split
Jessica Solbrack did her part as Community Colleges of Spokane split a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Eastern Region makeup softball doubleheader in Wenatchee on Monday.
Solbrack hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning in the opener to break a 4-4 tie, but Wenatchee (14-5, 5-3) came up with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 6-5 victory. The winning run scored on a CCS error.
Solbrack then pitched a five-hitter as CCS (16-4, 6-2) won the second game 8-4.
Outfielder Michelle Wells from University High was 5 for 6 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs in the doubleheader for the Sasquatch.
Baseball
Andrew Shoemaker pitched a five-hitter and Derek Howerton hit a fifth-inning home run as Treasure Valley won the opener of a NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls 1-0.
In the second game, Matt Comer had a home run among two hits to lead the Chukars (10-11, 2-2) to a 5-3 victory over the Sasquatch (9-6, 0-4).
Boxing
Shad Cramer of Spokane, representing the Howard Street Boxing team, won the light heavyweight title at the Las Vegas Regional Golden Gloves on Sunday.
Cramer, 22, earned a unanimous decision over Jeremy Chan of Oregon in the 178-pound final to qualify for the Golden Gloves National Championships in May in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Cramer had earlier won the Washington and Oregon 2009 Golden Gloves 8championships.
Track and field
Tonya Turner, a Whitworth sophomore from Mead, is the Northwest Conference women’s track athlete of the week after winning the 5,000 meters in a meet on her home track in 18 minutes, 34.68 seconds.
Men’s field athlete honors went to Whitworth junior Jeff Kintner, who posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks in winning the shot put and hammer in the same meet.
Basketball
Texas-bound guard Avery Bradley from Puyallup, Wash., won the McDonald’s All-American slam dunk contest in Coral Gables, Fla.
Bradley defeated Mason Plumlee and Derrick Favors in the finals.
Bradley earned a perfect score in the first round with two impressive dunks. On his first dunk he was on the baseline, caught the ball off the bounce, and did an impressive double-pump reverse dunk. On his second, he caught it off the bounce again and did a one-handed windmill.
