WSU’s offense too much for Oregon
Washington State collected 11 hits and Chad Arnold pitched seven strong innings as the Cougars beat Oregon 5-2 in Pac-10 baseball action Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Eight WSU (24-20, 13-7) batters recorded hits and Arnold (6-2) matched his career highs in innings and strikeouts (seven).
•Elsewhere in the Pac-10: Aaron Russell’s pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh inning broke a tie and lead Washington (23-24, 12-9) to a 4-3 win over No. 25 Oregon State in Seattle.
Softball
NCAA tournament: Washington earned the No. 3 overall seed in the 64-team tournament. The Huskies (41-10, 14-7 Pac-10) travel to Amherst, Mass., for regional play in their 16th consecutive postseason appearance. The UW will face Sacred Heart on Friday in its first game.
Track and field
Pac-10 combined: Two Washington State athletes had career-best performances, but all three Cougars competing finished out of scoring positions on the final day of the decathlon and heptahlon at the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Angela Jensen finished 10th in the heptathlon with a lifetime-best 4,842 points. In the decathlon, Kyle Schauble tallied 6,556 points for ninth place and Sean Harris scored a personal-best 6,231 points for 11th place.
