Eagles lose 2-1 in Sky semis
Brittney Doran’s goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute cut the deficit for the Eastern Washington women’s soccer team against Idaho State (10-7) to one, but the Eagles (7-9-2) saw their season end in the Big Sky Conference semifinals with a 2-1 loss Friday in Portland.
•As two teams starting the day ranked in the NCAA Top 15, Washington State (13-4-2, 5-1-2 Pac-10) and USC (12-6-1, 4-3-1) could not gain any ground against each other, finishing the match tied 0-0 through double overtime in Pullman.
•Lauren Cheney scored twice as UCLA (15-2-1, 7-1 Pac-10) defeated Washington (11-5-3, 3-3-2) 2-1 in Seattle.
•North Idaho College will meet Johnson County CC today in the NJCAA District B playoffs in Overland Park, Kan., after JCCC beat Laramie County CC 1-0.
Men’s soccer
Nick Love pushed Gonzaga (6-8-3, 3-6-1) out front early against Loyola Marymount (8-8-1, 3-6-1), but back-to-back goals by the Lions gave them a 2-1 win in West Coast Conference play in Los Angeles.
•Settling for five ties in their last seven matches, the Washington Huskies (5-5-6, 2-1-5) broke through with a 2-0 win against No. 25 San Diego State (6-5-5, 3-3-2) in Pac-10 play in San Diego.
Volleyball
The battle for the top spot in the Big Sky Conference went to Portland State (17-7, 11-2), which swept visiting Eastern Washington (15-9, 9-4) 26-24, 25-21, 25-22.
•Hana Cutura led with 19 kills and 10 digs as No. 13 California upended No. 24 Washington State 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 in Pullman.
•No. 4 Washington (20-2, 10-2) exacted some revenge after an earlier loss to No. 5 Stanford (15-7, 8-4), beating the Cardinal 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 in Seattle.
•Community Colleges of Spokane (27-11, 11-1) held its lead on the rest of the NWAACC East with a 25-19, 25-23, 27-25 sweep of Treasure Valley CC (13-12, 5-7) in Ontario, Ore.
•Ka’ipo Rocha had 10 kills and six blocks to lead Whitworth (10-17, 6-10) to a 25-5, 25-20, 25-22 sweep against Pacific (7-15, 2-13) in its season finale at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
•Playing in the second round of the Region 18 tournament, North Idaho College’s season came to an end with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 loss to Southern Idaho in Salt Lake City.
Wrestling
North Idaho (3-1) defended its home mat against a pair of opponents, knocking off Cerritos College 33-9 and then defeating Highline 26-12 in Coeur d’Alene. Kelvin Gastelum had a pair of pins, taking down Caleb Gerl in 2:58 and Casey Park in 5:15.
Hockey
In a game pitting the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s division leaders, Fernie (13-3-1-1) beat visiting Spokane (15-6-0-1) 9-1. The Ghostriders scored five goals in the second period to build an 8-0 lead before Brycen Fischer put the Braves on the board with a goal in the third.
